MHI and Green AI partner to accelerate industrial decarbonisation through energy efficiency

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Green AI Co., Ltd. have signed a Solutions Usage Partnership Agreement to promote cost-effective carbon emissions reduction and improve energy efficiency across Japan’s industrial sector, with a particular focus on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The partnership centres on the deployment of Green AI’s energy and CO2 reduction system, “Green AI,” which will be combined with MHI’s decarbonisation expertise, proprietary technologies and practical experience gained through reducing emissions at its own manufacturing facilities.

MHI has developed extensive expertise in energy conservation by using marginal abatement cost (MAC) curves to evaluate and prioritise carbon reduction initiatives across its operations. The company has successfully implemented a range of energy-saving measures. It plans to share this expertise with SMEs engaged in upstream manufacturing through its joint framework with Shoko Chukin Bank.

Under the agreement, Green AI will provide its energy and CO2 reduction platform to help manufacturers identify cost-effective decarbonisation opportunities and develop practical emissions reduction roadmaps tailored to their operations.

The Green AI platform incorporates a proprietary database of approximately 5,700 emissions reduction measures, enabling companies to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of various decarbonisation options. By integrating this database with MHI’s broad portfolio of industrial products, technologies and engineering expertise, the partnership aims to offer manufacturers a wider range of solutions to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

MHI said its technologies and operational know-how will support companies in implementing the recommended measures, strengthening the decarbonisation support already being delivered through its collaboration with Shoko Chukin Bank.

Both companies said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to achieving cost-effective CO2 emissions reductions by prioritising energy efficiency improvements. In addition to supporting climate goals, they believe enhanced energy performance will strengthen the competitiveness of Japanese manufacturers through improved productivity, lower operating costs and greater resilience against geopolitical uncertainties and rising energy prices associated with the transition away from fossil fuels.
