Rolls-Royce has unveiled the Trent XWB-84 Enhanced Performance (EP), the latest evolution of the world’s most efficient large aero engine, bringing new levels of fuel efficiency, sustainability and operational value to airline customers worldwide.
Designed exclusively for the Airbus A350, the Trent XWB-84 has long been recognized as the benchmark for widebody engine performance. Already delivering 25% lower fuel burn and CO₂ emissions compared to previous-generation engines, it powers some of the world’s longest commercial flights while offering exceptional reliability and versatility. With the introduction of the Enhanced Performance package, Rolls-Royce is further strengthening the engine’s position at the forefront of modern aviation.
At the heart of the Trent XWB-84 EP is a suite of advanced technological upgrades aimed at improving airline economics while supporting environmental goals. The enhanced engine delivers at least a 1% reduction in fuel consumption, a seemingly modest improvement that can translate into average annual fleet fuel savings of approximately $5 million for operators. In an industry where fuel remains one of the highest operating costs, such gains can have a significant impact on profitability.
The benefits extend beyond fuel efficiency. The Trent XWB-84 EP also contributes to lower carbon emissions, helping airlines meet increasingly stringent sustainability targets. Additionally, the engine offers quieter operations, reducing noise levels by up to two decibels and enhancing the passenger and community experience around airports.
Future readiness has also been a key focus in the engine’s development. The Trent XWB-84 EP is already certified to operate using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends of up to 50%, with Rolls-Royce preparing the platform for future operation on 100% SAF as the aviation industry progresses toward net-zero emissions goals.
To ensure that these performance improvements did not compromise durability, Rolls-Royce subjected the engine to one of its most extensive development and certification programmes to date. The Trent XWB-84 EP accumulated thousands of testing hours and flight cycles across eight development engines and three flight-test engines before achieving certification in December 2024.
The result is an engine that not only builds on the Trent XWB’s reputation for reliability and durability but also delivers greater efficiency, sustainability and long-term value. With the Trent XWB-84 EP, Rolls-Royce has once again demonstrated that even the industry’s best-performing widebody engine can continue to evolve.
