GE Aerospace has secured a new contract from the United States Air Force to complete the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) of its next-generation GE426 engine, marking another major step forward in the development of propulsion systems for future autonomous combat aircraft. The contract supports the Air Force’s medium-thrust-class Autonomous Collaborative Platforms (ACP) programme, which focuses on developing advanced uncrewed aircraft capable of operating collaboratively alongside manned military platforms in highly dynamic operational environments. The GE426 engine has been specifically designed as a purpose-built propulsion solution for medium-thrust-class autonomous combat aircraft, combining performance, affordability, scalability, and manufacturability to meet the operational and economic requirements of next-generation defense aviation programmes. The company had previously completed the concept design review of the GE426 engine in August 2025, successfully validating the engine architecture and advancing the programme into its next development phase. Under the newly awarded contract, GE Aerospace will continue refining the prototype engine through the preliminary design review stage, focusing on further improving system capability, production readiness, cost optimization, and alignment with evolving Air Force operational requirements. Steve Russell, Vice President and General Manager of Edison Works at GE Aerospace, highlighted the company’s ability to accelerate engine development timelines through advanced engineering and manufacturing capabilities. “We’ve proven we can rapidly move from concept to engine demonstration with the GEK800, and our focus now is on applying that process to the GE426 to ensure it provides the performance, affordability, and readiness the warfighter needs,” Russell stated. The GE426 programme forms part of GE Aerospace’s broader strategy to develop a new generation of compact, affordable, and scalable propulsion systems capable of powering autonomous combat aircraft, collaborative combat platforms, and other advanced military aviation applications. The company continues to expand its portfolio of small military engines, including the GEK800 and GEK1500 propulsion systems being developed in partnership with Kratos Defense & Security Solutions. Together, these programmes underscore the increasing importance of modular, cost-effective propulsion technologies as global defense forces accelerate investments in autonomous aviation ecosystems and collaborative combat aircraft concepts. The Air Force Research Laboratory’s ACP initiative is focused on enabling future autonomous systems to operate as coordinated teams alongside crewed aircraft, enhancing mission flexibility, survivability, and operational effectiveness across modern combat environments. The initiative represents one of the key pillars of the U.S. military’s evolving strategy toward manned-unmanned teaming and autonomous warfare capabilities. For the defense MRO sector, the emergence of new autonomous propulsion platforms such as the GE426 is expected to create fresh opportunities and challenges in maintenance planning, predictive sustainment, digital diagnostics, and lifecycle support. As autonomous combat aircraft become more integrated into military operations, maintenance ecosystems will likely evolve toward highly modular, data-driven sustainment models focused on rapid deployability and lower operational footprints.
