Boeing, Lufthansa, Rolls-Royce test new technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce aircraft noise

Boeing, Lufthansa Group and Rolls-Royce are testing new aviation technologies designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce aircraft noise using a 787-9 Dreamliner under the 2026 ecoDemonstrator Explorer program. The flight tests are scheduled to begin later this month at Boeing’s site in Glasgow, Montana.

The aircraft is scheduled for delivery to Lufthansa after the testing, equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. Engineers are evaluating a reduced-length Next Generation Inlet featuring advanced acoustic treatments along with modified departure and arrival procedures that use Intelligent Operations flight paths to improve fuel efficiency and reduce noise around airports.

“Boeing works tirelessly to deliver the aerospace innovations of today and tomorrow,” said Boeing CTO Lane Ballard, whilst adding, “The more efficient inlet and Intelligent Operations flight paths we’re evaluating on this year’s ecoDemonstrator Explorer are among the many promising concepts we’re working on. These enhancements have the potential to make our airplanes even more valuable to our partners, including customers like Lufthansa and suppliers like Rolls-Royce.”

The technologies are being tested as part of Phase III of the US Federal Aviation Administration’s Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) program. The initiative supports the development and testing of technologies that can improve aircraft efficiency while reducing emissions and noise.

“Lufthansa Group and Boeing share a long-standing partnership in aviation. We are pleased to support this year’s Boeing ecoDemonstrator Explorer program alongside Rolls-Royce” said Grazia Vittadini, CTO, Lufthansa Group and adds, “Together, we aim to help advance aviation’s transformation by testing technologies with the potential to improve fuel efficiency, reduce noise and prove their value in real-world operations.”

Alan Newby, Director of Research and Technology at Rolls-Royce said the program is built on a decade of collaboration with Boeing‘ to test technologies under operational conditions. Rolls-Royce provided engineering support and oversight for operating the Trent 1000 engine with the Next Generation Intel installed.

“The Boeing ecoDemonstrator program helps us continue to deliver improved products that meet our customers’ needs, including better fuel economy and lower noise emissions,” said Allison Melia, Boeing vice president of Sustainability, further highlighting, “Maturing these technologies is key to supporting their fleet modernization strategies and sustainability goals while advancing resilient aviation growth.”
