PT Pertamina (Persero) and Boeing signed an MoU to explore opportunities for developing Indonesia’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) ecosystem supporting the aviation sector’s decarbonization while advancing the country’s transition towards Net Zero Emissions (NZE).
The collaboration is focused on building a national SAF ecosystem by identifying sustainable feedback sources, advancing fuel production technologies, and supporting policy development to accelerate SAF adoption. The initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision, which is positioning SAF as a key pathway for reducing aviation-related carbon emissions. According to the ASEAN 2050 SAF Outlook report, Indonesia is emerging as one of ASEAN’s leading potential SAF producers with significant production capacity by 2050.
PT Pertamina (Persero) President, Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri said, “For Pertamina, this collaboration is not merely about developing alternative fuels; it is a long-term investment in building Indonesia’s national SAF ecosystem. With Indonesia’s abundant domestic resources, Pertamina’s refining capabilities, and Boeing’s global aviation expertise, we are confident this collaboration will accelerate the development of a competitive SAF industry, create greater value for Indonesia’s economy, and support the decarbonization of the aviation sector.”
Boeing highlighted Southeast Asia’s rapidly growing aviation market, forecasting strong passenger traffic growth and increasing aircraft demand over the next two decades. As air travel continues to expand, SAF is becoming an essential solution for lowering lifecycle carbon emissions compared with conventional jet fuel.

Indra Duivenvoorde, MD, Boeing Indonesia, “Indonesia is well positioned to lead the growth of sustainable aviation in Southeast Asia, “further adding; “We look forward to working with Pertamina on a range of SAF-related activities, from identifying potential feedstocks to supporting education and training on opportunities that SAF provides, to support the sustainable future of Indonesia’s aviation industry and the country’s broader economy.”
Pertamina is continuing several SAF initiatives, including producing and certifying Pertamina SAF, supporting its use with Pelita Air and developing the Cilacap Biorefinery project. The facility is producing SAF and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) using used cooking oil and other sustainable waste-based feedstocks, reinforcing Indonesia’s commitment to a cleaner and more resilient aviation industry.
