UEC opens Moscow facility to produce PD-8 and PD-14 engine parts

United Engine Corporation (UEC) has opened a new production and technology facility at UEC-Salut in Moscow for manufacturing aircraft engine components, including parts for the PD-8 engine for the Superjet and the PD-14 engine for the MS-21.

The facility covers more than 10,000 square metres and is equipped with approximately 230 machines and installations capable of performing CNC turning and milling, grinding, drilling and other metalworking operations.

Serial production of components for the PD-14, PD-8, AI-222-25, TV7-117 and VK-2500 engine programmes is organised at the facility.

“Developing the aerospace industry is a priority for Moscow’s industrial policy. Today, the capital is not only a manufacturing base but also a holistic scientific and industrial complex, uniting leading research institutes, design bureaus, and training centers. The opening of the new production and technology center marks an important step in further localising the production of critical components for domestic aircraft,” said Anatoly Garbuzov, Moscow Government Minister and Head of the Moscow Department of Investment and Industrial Policy.

The production facility includes seven areas equipped for CNC turning and milling, grinding, drilling and metalworking. The facility is intended to support UEC’s serial engine-component manufacturing programmes.

“Creating a high-tech product requires an equally complex production process, one that must be constantly infused with innovation. Its successful implementation is only possible with top-notch specialists and cutting-edge equipment. The new production and technology center meets these requirements. Last academic year alone, 1,500 Moscow students completed internships at UEC-Salut. Our new facility allows young professionals to fully realise their potential and supports UEC’s key production programs, including the production of parts for the PD-8, PD-14, and other advanced powertrains,” said UEC CEO Alexander Grachev.

Alongside manufacturing, the facility includes a training facility with nine laboratories covering electrical circuits, component quality control, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, industrial automation, materials science, industrial mechanics, and equipment installation.

“Every year, more than 750 college students will be able to undergo training at the new training center in Moscow. They will graduate as highly qualified specialists who will contribute to the creation of serial engines for new Russian aircraft,” stated Sergey Chemezov, CEO of Rostec State Corporation.

The facility will train multi-skilled specialists across at least five trades, allowing students to work across different stages of the production process and respond to changes in manufacturing requirements.

The Metal Science laboratory is equipped for compression, tension, torsion, and fracture-resistance testing of materials. Nearly 20 pieces of high-tech equipment are installed in the laboratory, including high-precision microscopes for materials analysis.

“The goal is to combine the excellent fundamental theoretical knowledge provided by our best technical universities with the acquisition of cutting-edge skills and familiarity with cutting-edge manufacturing. The establishment of such a center today at the United Engine Corporation (Rostec) fully facilitates this goal,” highlighted Valery Falkov, Minister of Science and Higher Education.

The Mechatronics laboratory provides training in the design of mechatronic systems, controller programming and prototype testing for automated production equipment.

The facility is part of a wider workforce-development programme being implemented by Rostec and Moscow authorities since 2022 to train technicians and engineers for the aviation and industrial sectors.

The new UEC-Salut facility therefore combines aircraft engine component production with technical training and materials testing, supporting manufacturing programmes for the PD-8, PD-14 and other Russian powerplants.

“Moscow’s cooperation with Rostec also makes a significant contribution to this effort. For its part, the city is creating the conditions for the implementation of new industrial projects, including providing investors with land plots on preferential terms through the mechanism for large-scale investment projects,” added Vladimir Efimov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Development Policy and Construction.
