Thales expands radar sustainment capability with Ireland GM400 Alpha and GM200 MM/A order

Ireland’s acquisition of four Thales Ground Master 400 Alpha and one Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission All-in-one radar is adding new air-surveillance assets while introducing modular, rapidly deployable systems designed for long-term field support and lifecycle sustainment.

The Irish Department of Defence and France’s Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) have signed an agreement for the delivery of the five Thales radars, with the first systems scheduled for delivery in 2027.

For defence maintenance organisations, the programme is notable not only for the radar capability being introduced but also for the architecture of the systems. Both radar families are designed around mobile configurations that integrate key equipment into transportable shelters, reducing the infrastructure required to deploy and support the systems in the field.

Modular architecture supports field maintenance

The GM400 Alpha is housed in a 20-foot ISO container and incorporates an integrated lifting system, allowing the radar to be transported and deployed without requiring a permanent fixed installation. Its six-second update rate and processing capability are designed to support tracking in complex environments.

The GM200 Multi-Mission All-in-one, meanwhile, combines the radar, mast, and power-generation equipment within a single 20-foot shelter. The system can be transported by truck and deployed in approximately 15 minutes.

From an MRO perspective, the common shelter-based approach can simplify logistics and field support by consolidating major equipment and associated support infrastructure into transportable units. It also allows systems to be relocated or reconfigured without the infrastructure requirements associated with conventional fixed radar installations.

The modular architecture is particularly relevant to military operators managing equipment across dispersed operating locations. Transportability can reduce the logistical burden associated with moving radar assets, while integrated equipment can provide maintenance teams with a defined configuration for inspection, servicing and troubleshooting.

Rapid production and lifecycle support

Thales says its industrial ramp-up programme has enabled short production lead times, with the first Irish deliveries planned for 2027. The Ground Master family has accumulated more than 300 systems sold across more than 40 countries, creating an established installed base around which technical knowledge, spares and maintenance expertise can develop.

For Ireland, introducing both the GM400 Alpha and GM200 MM/A creates a new requirement for radar-specific technical training, spares management, equipment maintenance and system-level support. The ability to draw on an established international fleet can provide a foundation for developing those capabilities.

Martin Soegaard, Country Director, Thales Denmark, Ireland, Iceland & Baltics, said, “The selection of Thales to enhance Ireland’s sovereign and defence capabilities in a rapidly changing and complex security landscape underscores our proven ability to deliver advanced air surveillance capabilities. The GM400α and GM200 MM/A, fitted with our cutting-edge sensor technology, will be instrumental in providing the nation’s first fully Recognised Air Picture, thereby supporting Ireland’s national awareness, security and sovereignty.”

The systems are also designed around modularity and interoperability, allowing their capabilities to evolve as operational requirements change. For sustainment organisations, this creates an opportunity to upgrade elements of the radar architecture without necessarily replacing the complete system.

Eric Huber, Vice President, Surface Radars, Thales, added, “We are honoured to support Ireland in strengthening its airspace sovereignty through the delivery of our GM400α and GM200 MM/A radars. These cutting-edge systems embody Thales’ commitment to providing modular, interoperable and rapidly deployable solutions for air defence. This agreement highlights Europe’s will to bolster sovereignty and resilience and the DGA’s trust in Thales as a key defence partner.”

Ireland establishes new radar sustainment requirements

The acquisition will ultimately give the Irish Defence Forces a new generation of mobile radar systems to support a recognised air picture. However, the introduction of the equipment also begins a longer sustainment cycle involving operator and maintainer training, spare parts, inspections, system diagnostics and future technology upgrades.

The GM400 Alpha and GM200 MM/A therefore represent more than an increase in Ireland’s radar inventory. Their modular, transportable configuration provides the Defence Forces with a platform that can be deployed and supported across different locations while creating a structured pathway for maintaining and upgrading the systems throughout their service lives.

With deliveries beginning in 2027, the immediate focus will be on introducing the systems and establishing the technical support infrastructure required to keep the new radar fleet operational.
