Textron Aviation, Merlin develop autonomous SkyCourier concept

Textron Aviation and Merlin have introduced a concept version of the Cessna SkyCourier designed to explore autonomous and pilot-optional cargo operations for military logistics.

The SkyCourier UX combines the twin-engine turboprop SkyCourier platform with Merlin Pilot autonomous flight software. The concept is intended to support cargo and supply movement between distribution hubs and dispersed or remote operating locations where conventional logistics routes may be constrained.

The aircraft is based on the FAA-certified SkyCourier, allowing the concept to draw on an existing production platform, manufacturing system, support network and sustainment infrastructure.

“Military planners are increasingly focused on how to sustain forces across distributed and contested operational environments,” said Bob Gibbs, vice president, Defense and Special Mission Sales. “The Cessna SkyCourier UX concept reflects our commitment to examining practical solutions to real-world mission challenges by leveraging real, certified products with innovative adaptation.”

The SkyCourier UX is being evaluated for operations between larger logistics hubs and smaller or austere locations. Its design objectives include operation from unimproved runways and a payload capacity of approximately 6,000 pounds, with space for up to three LD3 cargo containers.

The concept also examines changes to the aircraft configuration enabled by removing the requirement for an onboard crew. One design under evaluation replaces the conventional cockpit volume with additional cargo space and a forward-loading system with a large nose opening.

The proposed configuration could also incorporate aircraft kneeling capability and integrated loading systems to improve cargo access and handling at locations with limited ground-support infrastructure.

“By pairing a proven aircraft platform with autonomy technology, we’re exploring new approaches to contested logistics operations while also examining how autonomy may enable more efficient cargo aircraft designs that increase usable volume, improve cargo accessibility and support mission sustainment requirements,” Gibbs said.

Merlin said its Pilot system has completed autonomous flights on aircraft including the Cessna Caravan and Beechcraft King Air. The company will conduct further engineering studies and evaluations of autonomous and pilot-optional resupply operations using the SkyCourier platform.

The concept is being positioned between smaller autonomous cargo aircraft and larger military airlifters, with potential applications including transportation of repair parts, medical supplies and other mission-critical cargo to expeditionary bases, remote airfields and island locations.
