Astral Aviation completes C4 check on B767-300F strengthening in-house MRO capabilities

Astral Aviation has completed a C4 maintenance check on its Boeing 767-300F freighter, 5Y-SVR, marking another milestone in the Kenyan cargo airline’s efforts to strengthen its in-house aircraft maintenance capabilities.

The maintenance check involved 898 task cards and more than 9,500 man-hours, with a team of 46 professionals comprising seven engineers, 35 technicians and four planning staff.

The achievement marks the second major Boeing 767 maintenance check completed by Astral Aviation’s own Approved Maintenance Organisation (AMO), following a check on its Boeing 767-200F in 2025.

Building in-house maintenance expertise

According to Astral Aviation, completing the check demonstrates the airline’s growing technical capability and commitment to developing greater self-reliance in aircraft maintenance.

The airline’s leadership emphasised the importance of African carriers investing in their own engineering and maintenance capabilities rather than relying excessively on third-party providers. Developing in-house MRO expertise can give operators greater control over safety, quality, maintenance costs, turnaround times and aircraft availability.

It also creates opportunities to develop technical skills, build industry experience and support employment for aviation professionals across Africa.

Strengthening Africa’s aviation maintenance ecosystem

Astral Aviation’s latest achievement highlights the role of airline-owned maintenance organisations in building regional technical capacity. For operators, developing in-house capabilities can support greater control over maintenance planning and execution while reducing dependence on external service providers.

The airline said its ambition extends beyond operating freighter aircraft across Africa to developing the capabilities required to operate, maintain and support its own fleets to world-class standards.

Astral Aviation also acknowledged the contributions of its engineering, planning, technical and finance teams to the successful completion of the check.

The completion of the C4 check on 5Y-SVR follows the airline’s 2025 Boeing 767-200F maintenance milestone and represents a further step in its efforts to expand its in-house maintenance experience and support its fleet operations.
