Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has announced the appointment of Thoralf Wagner as its new Head of Technical Division, reinforcing its leadership structure at a time of increasing focus on fleet reliability, compliance, and technical modernisation.
In his new role, Wagner will lead the airline’s Technical Fleet Management function, overseeing all aspects of aircraft maintenance and repair operations. His responsibilities will include ensuring full compliance with aviation regulatory requirements while driving the ongoing technical development and modernisation of the SWISS fleet. The airline’s technical division comprises approximately 1,000 employees, reflecting the scale and complexity of its engineering and maintenance operations.
Wagner brings over two decades of experience in the aviation and MRO sector. He most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of Lufthansa Technik Budapest Ltd., where he was responsible for managing a key maintenance hub within the broader Lufthansa Technik network. During his tenure, he played a significant role in strengthening operational capabilities, advancing international logistics networks, and leading transformation initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery.
Before this, Wagner held several senior leadership roles within Lufthansa Technik, gaining extensive experience across maintenance operations, supply chain management, and technical programme execution. His background positions him well to lead SWISS’s technical operations in an increasingly complex and capacity-constrained MRO environment.
The appointment comes as airlines globally are placing greater emphasis on strengthening in-house technical capabilities, improving turnaround times, and ensuring fleet readiness amid rising utilisation rates and supply chain challenges.
Wagner is scheduled to assume his new role on June 1, 2026.
From an industry perspective, the appointment highlights the continued importance of experienced MRO leadership in driving operational resilience and technical excellence. As airlines expand fleets and introduce next-generation aircraft, the role of technical divisions is becoming increasingly strategic, extending beyond maintenance into areas such as digitalisation, predictive maintenance, and lifecycle management.
For SWISS, bringing in leadership with deep MRO and transformation experience signals a clear intent to strengthen its technical backbone and align its maintenance strategy with evolving operational demands.
