Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has placed a firm order for 18 Airbus A330-900 aircraft, reinforcing its long-term fleet renewal strategy and supporting the airline’s plans for international network expansion. The agreement was signed during a ceremony in Copenhagen by SAS CEO Anko van der Werff and Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, executive VP of Sales for Airbus Commercial Aircraft.
The new A330neo aircraft will enable SAS to increase capacity on existing long-haul routes while launching new international services, providing greater operational flexibility as passenger demand continues to grow.
Anko van der Werff said the order represents a significant step in the airline’s long-term strategy to modernise its fleet while enhancing operational efficiency and customer experience.
“On behalf of SAS, I am delighted to announce this order for the Airbus A330-900. Combining outstanding economics with improved environmental performance, the aircraft will play a key role in our long-term fleet strategy. It will allow us to deliver an exceptional customer experience, expand our network, and offer greater flexibility and convenience for our passengers.
Airbus welcomed the continued partnership, highlighting the aircraft’s operational efficiency and compatibility with SAS’ existing Airbus fleet.
“We are immensely proud to see SAS reaffirm its trust in Airbus to drive its fleet modernisation,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry. “The A330-900 is the undisputed benchmark for efficiency and versatility in its category. By integrating these 18 A330neo aircraft, SAS will benefit from unbeatable seat-mile economics and seamless operational synergies with its existing Airbus fleet.”
Powered by the latest-generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the Airbus A330-900 offers a range of up to 8,100 nautical miles (15,000 kilometres). It delivers a 25% reduction in fuel consumption, carbon emissions and operating costs compared with previous-generation competing aircraft. The model also features Airbus’ Airspace cabin, designed to improve passenger comfort with enhanced onboard amenities.
Like all Airbus aircraft currently in production, the A330neo is capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus targeting full compatibility with 100% SAF by 2030.
As of the end of May 2026, the Airbus A330 Family had secured more than 1,950 orders from 133 customers worldwide, underscoring its continued popularity among airlines seeking efficient and sustainable widebody aircraft.
