Safran Helicopter engines open new MRO facility near Hamburg

Safran Helicopter Engines has inaugurated a new MRO facility in Norderstedt, near Hamburg, strengthening its support capabilities for helicopter operators across Europe.

The 3,000-square-metre industrial site is dedicated to providing support, maintenance, and repair services for helicopter engines. The official opening ceremony was attended by Claus Ruhe Madsen, Minister of Economics, Transport, Labour, Technology, and Tourism of Schleswig-Holstein, along with around 200 customers, partners, and institutional representatives.

Safran Helicopter Engines has maintained a presence in Germany for 35 years and currently supports approximately 300 helicopter operators across Northern, Eastern, and Central Europe, covering a fleet of around 2,300 engines. The new facility enhances the company’s ability to deliver localised services for Arrius, Arriel, and RTM322 engine types, including maintenance, spare parts storage, and round-the-clock support.

The new site is 50% larger than its predecessor and has been designed with sustainability in mind. It incorporates several environmentally focused features, including photovoltaic panels, a green roof to absorb CO₂, and energy-efficient systems such as heat pumps and heat recovery ventilation.

Cédric Goubet, CEO of Safran Helicopter Engines, said the new site will play a key role in delivering high-quality, localised support to customers in the region. He added that the investment responds to strong growth in both civil and military helicopter markets in Europe, while also strengthening Germany’s industrial capabilities, particularly as new helicopters are introduced into the country’s armed forces.
