OMV Petrom advances €560 million SAF and HVO project at Petrobrazi refinery

OMV Petrom has made further progress on its sustainable fuels project at the Petrobrazi refinery in Romania, with major construction activities now completed and key process equipment installed.

The €560 million project will establish a new facility with an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO). The unit will use renewable feedstocks, including vegetable oils and used cooking oil, with green hydrogen supporting the production process.

OMV Petrom said the foundations for the new unit have been completed, requiring approximately 20,000 cubic metres of concrete. Major process equipment, including columns and reactors reaching up to 60 metres in height, has also been installed.

The facility is being designed with production flexibility, allowing OMV Petrom to adjust its product mix according to market demand and feedstock availability. In addition to SAF and HVO, the unit will be capable of producing bio-naphtha and bio-LPG.

The sustainable fuels produced at Petrobrazi are expected to deliver at least 65% lower lifecycle CO₂ emissions compared with conventional fossil-based fuels.

Commissioning of the new facility is targeted for 2028, alongside additional electrolyser capacity at Petrobrazi to support the production of green hydrogen.

OMV Petrom said the project forms part of its plans to transform the Petrobrazi refinery into a regional production hub for lower-carbon fuels serving sectors such as aviation and heavy transport, where electrification remains challenging.

Radu Căprău, member of the OMV Petrom Executive Board, said the project represents a significant transformation of the Petrobrazi refinery and will help adapt its operations to changing market requirements and the energy transition.
