SMBC Aviation Capital places two A321XLR aircraft with Air Seychelles

SMBC Aviation Capital has announced the placement of two Airbus A321XLR aircraft with Air Seychelles, further strengthening its commitment to supporting airline growth across the African and Indian Ocean region.

The aircraft, which are part of SMBC Aviation Capital’s existing Airbus order book, are scheduled for delivery in 2028. The addition of the long-range narrowbody aircraft will support Air Seychelles’ fleet modernisation plans and enable the airline to expand its route network with greater operational efficiency.

The Airbus A321XLR offers extended range and improved fuel efficiency, allowing airlines to operate longer routes with lower operating costs while enhancing network flexibility.

Barry Flannery, Chief Commercial Officer of SMBC Aviation Capital, said the placement reflects the lessor’s confidence in the airline’s long-term growth strategy. “This placement reflects the confidence we have in Air Seychelles’ growth strategy and the important role the A321XLR will play in expanding its network. We look forward to supporting the airline as it prepares to introduce these aircraft into service from 2028,” Flannery said.

Sandy Benoiton, Chief Executive Officer of Air Seychelles, said the agreement represents a key milestone in the airline’s fleet development programme. “The A321XLR is an outstanding aircraft that will allow us to strengthen connectivity with our traditional tourism markets while also opening opportunities to develop new destinations. We value our partnership with SMBC Aviation Capital and look forward to working together as we continue to grow,” Benoiton said.

The placement highlights the continued demand for next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft among airlines seeking to modernise their fleets. For the aftermarket sector, the induction of Airbus A321XLR aircraft is expected to drive future demand for specialised maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities, component support and engine services as operators prepare for the aircraft’s long-term entry into commercial service.
