Lufthansa has completed revalidation under the European Union’s Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) for the 2025 reporting year, reaffirming its commitment to environmental management and continuous improvement in sustainability performance.
The latest validation also marks the first time that Lufthansa City Airlines and Lufthansa Aviation GmbH have been certified under the EMAS framework, expanding the environmental management system across additional companies within the Lufthansa Group.
The assessment evaluated how the companies implement environmental measures and demonstrate measurable progress in reducing their environmental impact across both flight operations and ground activities.
EMAS is a voluntary environmental management framework developed by the European Union to help organisations continuously improve their environmental performance. The scheme incorporates all requirements of the ISO 14001 environmental management standard while adding stricter reporting, transparency and performance improvement criteria.
Lufthansa’s 2025 environmental statement places particular emphasis on operational fuel efficiency, outlining measures implemented throughout the flight cycle to reduce fuel consumption.
The airline said initiatives covering flight planning, cruise operations, approach procedures, landing and ground handling have contributed to measurable kerosene savings and improved operational efficiency.
The revalidation reflects Lufthansa’s continued focus on integrating environmental management practices into its day-to-day operations while pursuing greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions across its airline businesses.
