The first aircraft dismantling project in the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) has officially commenced at the Hainan FTP One-Stop Aircraft Maintenance Base, marking a significant milestone in the region’s ambition to become a comprehensive aviation maintenance and services hub.
The project is being carried out by Grand China Aviation Maintenance Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of HNA Technic, and represents the final link in Hainan’s aviation maintenance value chain, complementing existing capabilities in aircraft maintenance, repair, modification, and component services.
Aircraft dismantling is an increasingly important segment of the global aviation aftermarket. The process involves the systematic teardown of retired aircraft, followed by inspection, testing, refurbishment, and certification of reusable components. These used serviceable materials (USMs) can then be reintroduced into the aviation supply chain, generating economic value while supporting sustainability objectives through material reuse and reduced waste.
Industry observers view the development as a strategic step in strengthening Hainan’s position within the global MRO ecosystem. The island’s location at the crossroads of major Asia-Pacific air routes, combined with established aircraft maintenance and modification expertise, provides a strong foundation for expanding into aircraft end-of-life services.
The initiative is further supported by the Hainan Free Trade Port’s policy framework. Since the launch of island-wide special customs operations in December 2025, businesses operating within the FTP have benefited from expanded zero-tariff provisions, simplified customs procedures, and a range of trade facilitation measures designed to attract international aviation companies.
These incentives are particularly relevant for aircraft dismantling and component remanufacturing activities, where imported aircraft and parts can be processed more efficiently and at lower cost. The ability to refurbish and remarket aviation components under favourable customs and tax conditions is expected to enhance the commercial viability of the sector.
With capabilities now spanning aircraft maintenance, modification, dismantling, and component recycling, Hainan has established a fully integrated aviation services ecosystem. Industry stakeholders expect the development to attract additional investment across aviation logistics, component trading, MRO services, and aftermarket support activities, further strengthening the region’s role in the global aviation supply chain.
The launch underscores the growing importance of aircraft recycling and circular-economy practices within the aviation industry as operators seek cost-effective and sustainable solutions for managing ageing fleets.
