FedEx expands SAF procurement across five US airports

FedEx is expanding its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) procurement across its US air network, with new agreements expected to secure more than 20 million gallons of neat SAF through 2027.

The agreements cover FedEx operations at Newark Liberty International Airport, Oakland International Airport, Miami International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Depending on the location, FedEx will supply SAF at blend ratios between 30 per cent and 50 per cent.

The new procurement programme follows approximately five million gallons of neat SAF secured by FedEx from agreements beginning in 2025. Those supplies resulted in the deployment of about 16.5 million gallons of blended SAF across the same five airports.

Greg Paulus, Vice President of Enterprise Sourcing at FedEx, said, “The latest agreements represent an expansion of SAF within the FedEx air network enabled, in part, by state and federal level incentives.”

For an air cargo operator, expanding SAF use requires coordination between fuel suppliers, airports and existing aircraft fuelling infrastructure. Blended fuel also lets SAF be incorporated into conventional jet fuel supply arrangements at the locations covered by the agreements.

FedEx is working toward a target of sourcing 30 per cent of its jet fuel from alternative sources by 2030. The latest agreements increase the amount of SAF being incorporated into its fuel supply across the five airports.

Karen Blanks Ellis, Chief Sustainability Officer and Vice President of Environmental Affairs at FedEx, said, “SAF is one of the most impactful decarbonization solutions available to aviation today and an important part of our approach to reducing emissions. For the market to grow, supply needs to be reliable, affordable, and sustainable. Expanding our procurement allows us to employ more SAF in our network while bolstering the demand for greater production and scale.”

The agreements are expected to remain in effect through calendar year 2027, providing FedEx with additional SAF volumes as production and airport-level supply arrangements develop.

The company said it will continue evaluating additional SAF procurement opportunities based on fuel availability, infrastructure and economics across its air network.

For aviation operators and their technical organisations, wider SAF adoption also requires continued coordination around fuel specifications, aircraft and engine approvals, storage and distribution processes, and airport fuelling infrastructure.
