Saab and GKN Aerospace have signed an agreement to strengthen Sweden’s domestic capability for engine and propulsion-system support for the Gripen E/F fighter programme.
The agreement will enable GKN Aerospace to progressively take on a greater role in engine-related activities, providing Saab with technical expertise, capacity and support. The move follows a Swedish Government decision to strengthen national capability and expertise around the engine used by Gripen E/F.
For the Gripen E/F programme, the cooperation is expected to build domestic technical capacity for long-term engine support, including engineering expertise, component knowledge and lifecycle activities as the fleet enters sustained operations.
“The cooperation agreement we have now signed lays the foundation for establishing GKN Aerospace as Saab’s partner in engine-related matters for Gripen E/F. For Saab, being able to contribute to strengthening Sweden’s fighter aircraft capability and domestic industrial capacity is of utmost importance,” said Johan Segertoft, head of Saab’s business unit Gripen.

Saab and GKN Aerospace already cooperate on the engine supporting the Gripen C/D. The new agreement extends that relationship to the Gripen E/F, providing continuity of Swedish industrial expertise while expanding the domestic support base for the newer fighter variant.
The cooperation could support future engine-related maintenance, technical support, and lifecycle activities as Sweden develops its Gripen E/F sustainment capability.
