MTU Maintenance Zhuhai has reached the 100-engine milestone at its Jinwan facility in Zhuhai, China, marking the continued ramp-up of its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capacity for Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM geared turbofan (GTF) engines.
The PW1100G-JM powers Airbus A320neo family aircraft, creating a growing requirement for engine maintenance as the global GTF fleet accumulates flight hours and enters scheduled shop visits.
The Jinwan facility operates under MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, a joint venture between China Southern Airlines and MTU Aero Engines. Since opening in March 2025, the site has progressively expanded its MRO capabilities and workforce to support increasing GTF maintenance demand.
Jinwan accelerates PW1100G-JM MRO ramp-up
The 100th engine redelivery comes less than 18 months after the facility began operations. The pace of the ramp-up reflects the growing requirement for PW1100G-JM shop visits and the integration of Jinwan into MTU’s wider GTF maintenance network.
Gert Wagner, President and CEO of MTU Maintenance Zhuhai and responsible for the Jinwan branch, said experience from MTU’s existing GTF operations helped support the new facility’s development.
“The rapid success of our Jinwan facility, including this 100th redelivery so soon after the start of operations, speaks foremost to the collaborative spirit that governs the MTU network,” said Wagner. “The experience and expertise that we developed in the GTF program at our original site over the years was further empowered and supported by our colleagues from MTU sites in Hannover and Munich, Germany, as well as EME Aero in Poland. The scaling up of Jinwan is also their accomplishment”, highlighted Wagner.
The facility is now positioned as part of Pratt & Whitney’s global GTF MRO network, providing additional engine shop capacity in the Asia-Pacific region.
Advanced MRO technologies support turnaround
Jinwan’s ramp-up has been supported by the introduction of MRO technologies and processes designed to improve engine overhaul efficiency.
The facility uses the Fixed Overhaul System (FOS), which supports a standardized approach to engine overhaul activities. MTU is also implementing initiatives aimed at reducing turnaround times as the site increases its shop-visit volume.
A dedicated training engine has been used to accelerate employee qualification and practical training. This provides technicians with an environment to develop maintenance skills and gain hands-on experience while supporting the expansion of the Jinwan workforce.
The combination of established GTF maintenance expertise, standardized overhaul processes, and workforce development has allowed the facility to increase its output while building the capabilities required for higher future shop-visit volumes.
Workforce expansion supports growing GTF demand
The Jinwan facility is continuing to expand its workforce as demand for PW1100G-JM maintenance increases. Technician training and qualification remain an important part of the site’s ramp-up as additional engine shop visits are introduced.
MTU Maintenance has drawn on expertise from its existing GTF operations, including facilities in Hannover and Munich and EME Aero in Poland, to support the development of the Jinwan operation.
This network approach allows maintenance procedures, technical knowledge and operational experience developed at established GTF facilities to be applied at the newer site.
For operators, the additional capacity is particularly relevant as the PW1100G-JM fleet continues to grow and engines move through their scheduled maintenance cycles.

Jinwan targets next 100-engine milestone
Following the redelivery of its 100th PW1100G-JM, the Jinwan team is targeting the next 100-engine milestone within a shorter timeframe.
The planned increase in output will further establish the facility as a regional source of PW1100G-JM MRO capacity. As the site’s workload increases, its maintenance infrastructure, technician base and overhaul processes will need to scale alongside engine shop-visit demand.
The milestone also demonstrates the pace at which new GTF MRO capacity is being brought online to support the expanding Airbus A320neo family fleet. For MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, Jinwan’s next phase will focus on increasing throughput while maintaining the technical and quality requirements associated with PW1100G-JM engine overhaul.
