SWISS is expanding its aircraft maintenance capabilities at its Zurich home base with the construction of a new dedicated Composite Shop at Zurich Airport. The airline has marked the start of construction with a groundbreaking ceremony for the facility, which is designed to strengthen its in-house capabilities for the repair and maintenance of composite aircraft components.
The new facility is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2027 and will be used exclusively by SWISS. The investment is part of the airline’s long-term strategy to strengthen Zurich as a key maintenance location and prepare its MRO operations for the changing requirements of its fleet.
Dedicated facility for composite repairs
Composite materials are becoming increasingly important in modern commercial aircraft, with newer-generation aircraft making greater use of lightweight composite structures and components. As the composition of aircraft fleets changes, MRO organisations need specialised infrastructure, equipment and expertise to inspect, repair and maintain these components.
SWISS’ new Composite Shop will provide dedicated space for composite repair and maintenance activities. The facility will allow the airline to handle a larger range of composite-related work internally rather than relying as heavily on external maintenance providers.
According to SWISS, bringing additional composite repair capabilities in-house will increase its independence and flexibility in managing aircraft maintenance requirements.
The new facility is also expected to improve planning reliability by giving the airline greater control over the scheduling and execution of composite repairs.
Supporting fleet availability
The investment comes as SWISS continues to evolve its fleet and adapt its maintenance organisation to support newer aircraft and technologies. By increasing its internal composite maintenance capabilities, the airline aims to improve its ability to respond to repair requirements and manage maintenance work more efficiently.
Greater in-house capability can also help reduce reliance on external capacity, giving SWISS more flexibility when planning aircraft maintenance and managing potential repair requirements.
The airline expects the new Composite Shop to contribute to the long-term availability of its aircraft by providing additional maintenance capacity at its home base.
Zurich to strengthen its role as an MRO base
The new Composite Shop represents another investment in Zurich as a strategic maintenance location for SWISS. The airline’s decision to develop a dedicated facility at its home base reflects the growing importance of specialised MRO capabilities as aircraft technology continues to evolve.
The facility will be exclusively operated by SWISS and is expected to become operational by the end of 2027. Once operational, the Composite Shop will complement the airline’s existing maintenance capabilities at Zurich and provide dedicated infrastructure for composite component work.
For SWISS, the project is not only about adding physical capacity but also about preparing its maintenance organisation for the future aircraft fleet. As modern aircraft incorporate an increasing number of composite materials, specialised repair capabilities will become an increasingly important part of airline MRO operations.
With the new Composite Shop, SWISS is looking to strengthen its technical independence, improve maintenance flexibility and enhance planning reliability while supporting the long-term availability of its fleet. The investment also underlines the airline’s commitment to maintaining Zurich as a key MRO location and ensuring that its maintenance infrastructure keeps pace with the changing needs of modern aviation.
