From aircraft components to an Arsenal icon
Sometimes, the most interesting MRO stories are not found inside an aircraft.
Emirates Engineering has taken its engineering expertise beyond traditional aircraft maintenance to create a 2.4-metre illuminated Arsenal Crest, bringing together aviation materials, technical skills and football in an impressive tribute to one of the airline’s longest-standing partnerships.
Built entirely in-house in Dubai, the sculpture was created by 15 Emirates Engineering experts over 34 days. The team used processes familiar to aviation, including cutting, machining, curving, riveting, assembly and painting to transform aircraft materials into one of football’s most recognisable symbols.
Engineering with a different purpose
What makes the project particularly interesting from an MRO perspective is the use of genuine aviation components in the sculpture.
Cargo tracks, aircraft floor panels and roller components from Emirates’ operations were incorporated into the structure, giving materials originally designed for aircraft and cargo handling a completely new purpose.
It is a creative demonstration of the versatility of aviation engineering expertise. The same precision and craftsmanship required in aircraft maintenance were applied to a project that had nothing to do with keeping an aircraft in the air, yet still demanded the same attention to detail.
From Dubai to the Emirates Stadium
The engineering challenge did not end when the crest was completed. The 2.4-metre sculpture was placed inside a custom-built protective crate before being handed over to Emirates SkyCargo for its journey from Dubai to London Stansted.
Handling a one-of-a-kind and delicate installation required the same specialist logistics expertise that Emirates SkyCargo applies to valuable and sensitive cargo around the world.
Today, the completed crest stands at the Directors Box and Diamond Club entrance at Emirates Stadium, giving Arsenal supporters an opportunity to see the unusual result of aviation engineering and football coming together.
A partnership spanning two decades
The project also marks another chapter in the Emirates-Arsenal relationship, which began in 2006 and has now been extended through 2033.
For Arsenal fans, the sculpture is a striking symbol of that partnership. For the aviation and MRO community, it offers something different: a glimpse at how engineering talent, materials and capabilities developed for aviation can be applied creatively outside their traditional environment.
The Aircrafted Arsenal Crest may be a football story on the surface, but underneath it is a story about engineering, precision, teamwork, craftsmanship and the ability to turn aviation expertise into something entirely unexpected.
And sometimes, that is what makes an MRO story worth celebrating.
