Virgin Australia has made a significant move reinforcing a commitment to modernizing its fleet and embracing sustainability by placing a firm order for eight Embraer E190-E2 aircraft. This latest addition is set to transform the airline’s operations and environmental footprint. The E190-E2, renowned for being the world’s most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft, will begin complementing Virgin Australia’s larger narrowbody jets and replacing the airline’s aging Fokker fleet.

The announcement took center stage at an event attended by the Deputy Premier of Western Australia, the Hon. Rita Saffioti, who also holds the roles of Treasurer, Minister for Transport, and Minister for Tourism. This new fleet will be stationed in Perth and operated by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA). With a range of approximately six hours and powered by the advanced Pratt & Whitney PW1900G engines, the E190-E2 is set to enhance connectivity and efficiency across the region.

Jayne Hrdlicka, CEO, Virgin Australia Group, said, “When the new E190-E2 enters service from October 2025, it will become the first new aircraft in the WA charter market this century, The E190-E2 is the most fuel-efficient aircraft in its segment and will reduce emissions by about 30 per cent compared to the outgoing F100. These aircraft also feature significantly lower noise profiles and enhanced passenger comfort. When the E190-E2 joins the fleet from late next year it will predominantly operate charter flights for VARA, bolstering its position as a leading operator in the WA charter market.”

The E190-E2 builds on the success of its predecessor, the first-generation E-Jets, which have been a staple in regional aviation for over 20 years. Featuring cutting-edge aerodynamics, a novel wing design, and state-of-the-art technologies, the E190-E2 offers substantial improvements in fuel efficiency and carbon emissions. Additionally, the aircraft is certified to fly with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blends and has demonstrated the capability to operate on 100% SAF during test flights.

Martyn Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer, Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, “This is a huge vote of confidence by the Virgin Australia Group in our charter business and the WA market. The E2 is a game changer. We are excited to welcome Virgin Australia to the Embraer family and look forward to seeing our best in class E2 – renowned for comfort, quietness, and low emissions – take the Airline to even greater heights.”
