Vietnam Airlines to lease 19 B-737 MAX 8 aircraft to support fleet expansion

Vietnam Airlines has announced plans to lease 19 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from three global aircraft lessors, strengthening its fleet expansion strategy as it prepares for continued growth in domestic and regional markets. The leased aircraft are scheduled for delivery beginning in 2028 and will supplement the airline’s existing Boeing 737 MAX order book while helping address ongoing aircraft supply constraints.

Under the agreements, Vietnam Airlines will lease 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from SMBC Aviation Capital, four from Avolon and five from Phoenix Aviation Capital, managed by AIP Capital.

Once all leased aircraft are delivered, the carrier’s Boeing 737 MAX fleet will grow to 69 aircraft, comprising 50 firm orders and 19 leased aircraft.

Vietnam Airlines said the expanded fleet will support network growth, improve operational efficiency and meet rising passenger demand across domestic and regional international routes.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 offers approximately 20% lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared with previous-generation aircraft, supporting the airline’s fleet modernisation and sustainability objectives while enhancing its competitiveness in the Asia-Pacific aviation market.
