United Airlines will install larger overhead bins on its Skywest-operated Embraer E175 fleet providing more room for roll-aboard carry-on bags, allowing for up to an extra 29 carry-on bags, representing an 80 percent increase in space.

United Airlines has unveiled plans to install new, larger overhead bins on its Skywest-operated Embraer E175 fleet, aimed at providing passengers with more room for their roll-aboard carry-on bags. These new bins, set to be available on 50 aircraft with a 76-seat configuration by the end of the year, signify United’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and improving operational efficiency. The airline may expand this offering to more than 150 aircraft by the end of 2026.

As the first airline to introduce these larger overhead bins on E175 airplanes, United estimates that this move will nearly eliminate the need for one million annual passengers to gate-check bags on over 150,000 E175 flights. The initiative reflects United’s dedication to addressing customer needs and improving convenience for travelers. The addition of larger overhead bins on the Embraer E175 fleet marks a significant enhancement in customer convenience, allowing for up to an extra 29 carry-on bags on the regional jets, representing an 80 percent increase in space.

“Customer sentiment for the new overhead bins and signature interiors has been extremely positive. By helping to eliminate the need to gate check bags, we are seeing an increase in gate and boarding satisfaction,” said Linda Jojo, chief customer officer, United. “This is just the latest way we’re working to create an industry-leading experience for all our customers – whether they’re on an international or regional flight,” he further added.

United’s commitment to providing industry-leading experiences extends beyond its regional fleet. With more than 200 mainline aircraft already equipped with bins large enough to accommodate every passenger’s carry-on bag, the airline is currently retrofitting its domestic narrowbody fleet. The introduction of new overhead bins in the regional fleet will ensure a seamless connecting experience for customers. Additionally, each E175 aircraft fitted with these bins will feature braille and tactile placards to enhance accessibility, aligning with United’s broader initiative announced in 2023.

United Airlines, along with United Express, operates an extensive network of over 4,000 flights per day to over 350 airports across six continents. SkyWest, the world’s largest E175 operator, operates more than 700 daily departures to over 140 destinations as United Express. In 2023, United achieved the milestone of becoming the world’s largest carrier by seat-miles, having transported over 150 million passengers.
