Tata Advanced Systems’ C-130J MRO facility set for commissioning by end-2026

India’s defence aviation MRO is set for a major boost as Tata Advanced Systems Limited prepares to commission the country’s first privately operated defence Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility by the end of 2026.

Located near Bengaluru airport, the new facility spans 16 acres and includes approximately 15,000 square metres of built-up space. Designed to support the Indian military’s transport aviation fleet, the facility will undertake heavy maintenance, repairs and avionics upgrades for the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. The project is expected to create more than 250 skilled jobs while establishing a new benchmark for private-sector participation in defence aircraft sustainment.

The facility represents an important step in India’s efforts to develop indigenous lifecycle support capabilities for military aircraft. By bringing advanced maintenance capabilities closer to fleet operators, the MRO centre is expected to reduce dependence on overseas maintenance providers, improve aircraft availability and support faster turnaround times for critical maintenance activities.

Industry observers view the development as a significant addition to the country’s growing defence MRO infrastructure. As India continues to expand its military aviation capabilities, localised maintenance and upgrade facilities are increasingly becoming a strategic requirement for ensuring operational readiness and long-term fleet support.

The facility will also contribute to the development of specialised aerospace skills and support the growth of a broader defence aviation supply chain, including component repair, engineering services and technology integration capabilities.

The progress of the C-130J MRO programme was recently reviewed during a visit by N. Chandrasekaran to TASL’s Bengaluru facilities. During the visit, he was briefed on the company’s ongoing aerospace and defence initiatives, including unmanned aerial systems, loitering munitions, optronics products and land mobility platforms.

Chandrasekaran also visited TASL’s Vemagal facility, where he reviewed the company’s aerospace manufacturing programmes, including the Airbus H125 Final Assembly Line established in partnership with Airbus.

For India’s defence MRO sector, however, the upcoming C-130J facility remains the most significant development. The project underscores the growing role of private industry in supporting military aviation sustainment and aligns with the government’s broader objective of building a self-reliant aerospace and defence ecosystem capable of supporting aircraft throughout their operational lifecycle.
