STS Engine Services has received Green Business certification for its environmental management practices at its Stansted engine maintenance facility.
The certification recognises measures introduced to reduce energy consumption, waste and the environmental impact of engine maintenance operations.
STS Engine Services has installed solar panels at the Stansted facility, providing a proportion of its electricity requirements. The site has also introduced LED lighting, improved insulation and energy-efficient systems to reduce electricity consumption.
The company has added electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid charging points and introduced measures including cycle-to-work and car-sharing schemes to reduce transport-related emissions.
A key change has been made to the engine preservation process. Engine rotation during preservation can traditionally require equipment powered by Jet A1 fuel. At STS Engine Services, the dedicated Engine Preservation Bay uses compressed air instead, with the system supported by solar-generated electricity.
The preservation process also incorporates filtration technology designed to capture oil vapour, reducing the release of oil-related emissions during engine maintenance activities.
STS Engine Services has also introduced measures to reduce paper consumption, improve recycling and manage waste from day-to-day operations. Recycling programmes cover materials including printer cartridges and coffee pods.
The measures form part of the company’s environmental management programme as it expands its engine maintenance activities.
For an engine MRO facility, the use of alternative power sources for preservation equipment, improved energy efficiency and waste reduction can reduce the environmental impact of maintenance processes while maintaining existing workshop functions.
The Green Business certification provides a framework for continuing to monitor these activities and identify further opportunities to reduce energy use, waste, and emissions across the facility.
