SMBC Aviation Capital orders 100 A320neo family aircraft, selects LEAP-1A engines

SMBC Aviation Capital has placed a firm order for 100 Airbus A320neo family aircraft and selected CFM International’s LEAP-1A engines to power part of the new fleet, reinforcing its long-term commitment to fleet renewal and sustainable aviation growth.

The order, finalised at the Farnborough International Airshow, comprises 65 Airbus A321neo and 35 Airbus A320neo aircraft. CFM International will supply LEAP-1A engines for the 35 A320neo aircraft, further expanding its partnership with the Dublin-based aircraft lessor.

SMBC Aviation Capital said the latest aircraft order will provide a steady pipeline of next-generation narrowbody aircraft through the mid-2030s, enabling the company to support airline customers with fleet modernisation and expansion while meeting growing demand for fuel-efficient aircraft.

The lessor, already one of Airbus’ largest customers, has accumulated more than 900 direct Airbus aircraft commitments across all programmes together with its parent company, Sumitomo Corporation.

The Airbus A320neo family remains the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft programme, having secured more than 20,200 orders globally. Compared with previous-generation aircraft, the A320neo family delivers at least a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions, while the larger A321neo offers increased passenger capacity and extended range for high-demand routes.

Alongside the aircraft order, SMBC Aviation Capital confirmed an agreement with CFM International for LEAP-1A engines to power the 35 Airbus A320neo aircraft.

The latest engine selection expands the lessor’s long-standing relationship with CFM, whose portfolio with SMBC Aviation Capital now exceeds 750 aircraft powered by LEAP and CFM56 engines that are in service, owned, managed or on order.

SMBC Aviation Capital said the LEAP-1A engines will help airlines improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and lower noise levels while supporting the aviation industry’s decarbonisation objectives.

CFM International has delivered more than 10,000 LEAP engines worldwide. It continues to enhance the engine family through durability improvements and maintenance upgrades designed to increase time on wing and reduce operating costs.

The combined aircraft and engine agreements strengthen SMBC Aviation Capital’s position as one of the world’s leading aircraft lessors while ensuring a continued supply of next-generation aircraft to airline customers over the coming decade.
