Saudi Arabia expands RSAF fleet with A330 MRTT Aircraft

Saudi Arabia’s A330 MRTT acquisition strengthens RSAF capabilities with advanced Air-to-Air refueling and transport solutions.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has ordered four more Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft for the RSAF. Conversion of the first aircraft is scheduled to commence in early 2026, with all four expected to be operational by 2027. Moreover, The RSAF will primarily use these aircraft for air-to-air refueling and transport missions. Furthermore, This enhances their strategic operations capabilities.

Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space, said, “This new order demonstrates the high level of customer satisfaction with the A330 MRTT. This is the third contract signed by Saudi Arabia for the A330 MRTT, making the RSAF one of the largest MRTT operators in the world.”

The contract additionally covers a logistics support package encompassing spare parts, training services, and service support for the four new aircraft. Moreover, All RSAF A330 MRTT aircraft have hose and drogue pods and a boom system. They also feature a refueling receptacle for boom-equipped tankers.

In January 2024, Airbus signed an Industrial Participation (IP) agreement with GAMI (General Authority for Military Industries) as part of the contract. Additionally, The agreement aims to support Vision 2030, a Saudi-government program diversifying the country’s economy by fostering regional industrial ecosystem development and growth.

As part of the agreement, technology and expertise from the RSAF A330 MRTT will transfer to local firms. Additionally, SAMI and Airbus have designated SAAMS, their joint venture, as the primary vehicle for industrial localization efforts.

The A330 MRTT is the leading new-generation tanker and transport aircraft. It commands a 90% global market share outside the USA. Moreover, It has garnered 82 orders from 15 countries across Europe, Asia, America, and Oceania.
