Safran to support the Eurodrone programme

Safran to support the Eurodrone programme.
The first prototype is scheduled to begin production in 2024, with the first delivery expected by the end of the decade.

Safran Electronics & Defense will be involved in designing, developing, producing including wheels, brakes, and hydro-mechanical equipment, and supplying the braking control module.

Safran Landing Systems has secured a contract with Airbus Defence and Space to provide the wheels and brakes system for the Eurodrone, Europe’s new MALE RPAS (Medium Altitude Long Endurance Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) reconnaissance drone. The contract involves designing, developing, qualifying, and producing the work package, which includes wheels, brakes, and hydro-mechanical equipment, as well as supplying the braking control module developed by Safran Electronics & Defense. The deal includes a total of 60 shipsets.

Safran Electronics & Defense has also been awarded a contract from Leonardo to develop and supply the high-performance EuroflirTM 610 electro-optical (optronic) system for the Eurodrone, further strengthening the company’s position in the market.

In addition, Safran Electronics & Defense’s involvement in the program is also an important development, as the EuroflirTM 610 electro-optical system is a high-performance optronic system that provides excellent situational awareness, which is crucial for effective reconnaissance missions.

François Bastin, CEO, Safran Landing Systems said, “We are proud to work on this program with Airbus Defence and Space. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate both our know-how and ability to develop the technologies that will equip this unprecedented new military system. We are looking forward to meeting a number of technical challenges on this program, especially weight reduction, and delivering the best possible value proposition to our customer!”

The Eurodrone program is aimed at equipping France, Germany, Spain, and Italy with a highly autonomous medium-altitude reconnaissance drone, which will enhance the European Union’s operational and industrial sovereignty. The first prototype is scheduled to begin production in 2024, with the first delivery expected by the end of the decade.

This contract is a significant achievement for Safran Landing Systems, which has a long-standing reputation for designing and manufacturing landing gear systems for various aircraft, from business jets to military helicopters. The company’s expertise in lightweight materials and systems will be vital in reducing the overall weight of the Eurodrone, which is essential for its operational efficiency and longevity.
