Safran expands Bengaluru Engineering Hub to strengthen India’s aerospace and defence innovation ecosystem

Safran has inaugurated the expanded facilities of Safran Data Systems India (SDS India) in Bengaluru, reinforcing its long-term commitment to India’s rapidly growing aerospace, space and defence sectors. The expansion, which more than doubles the site’s workspace, marks another milestone in the French aerospace group’s continued investment in strengthening engineering, digital innovation and advanced technology capabilities in the country.

The enhanced facility is designed to support Safran’s growing portfolio of engineering and technology programmes while serving as a key development centre for both India’s strategic aerospace initiatives and the company’s global operations. The expansion reflects increasing demand for advanced engineering expertise as India continues to emerge as a major hub for aerospace design, research and technology development.

Safran said the enlarged Bengaluru centre will play an increasingly important role in supporting India’s ‘Make in India’ vision by developing technologies for the country’s expanding space and defence ecosystem while contributing to the group’s worldwide engineering and innovation programmes.

The new facility was inaugurated in the presence of Philippe Errera, Executive Vice President, International Development & Institutional Relations, Safran, and DGTRE Director Dr. Ramana Murthy, who attended the event as chief guests. Dr. Murthy acknowledged the continued growth and contribution of the Safran Data Systems India team over the past two decades.

The expanded state-of-the-art engineering workspace will support several strategically important national programmes, including projects for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), next-generation space start-ups, DRDO initiatives of national importance and the Rafale ‘Make in India’ programme. The investment further strengthens Safran’s role as a technology partner supporting India’s ambitions to build indigenous aerospace and defence capabilities.

Beyond infrastructure expansion, the development reflects the increasing importance of digital engineering in modern aerospace programmes. Advanced software development, embedded systems, navigation technologies, data systems and mission-critical engineering are becoming central to the future of aircraft, spacecraft and defence platforms, making engineering centres such as Safran’s Bengaluru facility vital components of the global aerospace value chain.

India has steadily emerged as one of Safran’s key engineering and industrial destinations, with the company expanding its footprint across aircraft propulsion, avionics, landing systems, defence technologies and engineering services. The latest investment aligns with the group’s broader strategy of leveraging India’s highly skilled engineering talent while supporting the country’s growing role in global aerospace innovation.

For the wider aviation industry, Safran’s expansion highlights the continued shift towards distributed global engineering networks, where digital technology centres increasingly complement traditional manufacturing and MRO operations. As aircraft become more software-driven and connected, engineering capabilities in areas such as data systems, predictive technologies, cybersecurity and digital integration are expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting the future of aviation maintenance, fleet performance and operational efficiency.

The expansion of Safran Data Systems India also reinforces Bengaluru’s position as one of Asia’s leading aerospace technology hubs, attracting continued investment from global OEMs seeking to strengthen research, engineering and innovation capabilities while supporting India’s emergence as a strategic centre for the global aerospace and defence industry.
