Safran Electrical & Power, a key player in aviation technology, has achieved a significant milestone in aircraft hybridization with the successful development of the GENeUSTM 300 motor-generator. This high-power-density equipment, designed to hybridize future propulsion systems, has demonstrated its capability to generate 300 kW with an impressive efficiency of around 96%. The development of GENeUSTM 300 is a crucial element of Safran’s broader decarbonization strategy, focusing on the electrical hybridization of aircraft and propulsion systems. The technology roadmap aimed to create an exceptionally powerful rotating machine with high energy density, capable of hybridizing the engines of next-generation aircraft.

The goal of Safran Electrical & Power’s technology roadmap was to develop an extremely powerful, energy-dense rotating machine, capable of hybridizing the engines of the future.

“GENeUS 300 is a technological marvel! We’ve compacted the power by a factor of three in volume compared with a conventional generator,” said Florent Nierlich, Vice President, Technology and Innovation, Safran Electrical & Power.

The successful ground tests mark a significant achievement, confirming the potential of GENeUSTM 300 for the electric hybridization of aircraft engines. The technology opens avenues for enhancing propulsive efficiency in the next generation of single-aisle aircraft and enables the electrification of various aircraft systems. Notably, it aligns with the objectives of the RISE technology development program, a collaboration between Safran Aircraft Engines and GE Aerospace, aimed at advancing propulsion technologies and improving the efficiency of future aircraft motors.

“The GENeUS 300 motor-generator is a genuine breakthrough technology! Developing such a dense, powerful machine was an ambitious gamble. We are proud that the tests and analyses have confirmed its performance and demonstrated its full potential for the electric hybridization of aircraft. It’s another step towards decarbonizing aviation,” concludes Bruno Bellanger, Executive Vice President & General Manager of Power Division, Safran Electrical & Power.
