Saab secures contract to supply 16 Gripen E fighter aircraft to Ukraine

Saab has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to supply 16 Gripen E fighter aircraft to Ukraine, marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s air defence capabilities.

The agreement, valued at approximately SEK 24.6 billion, will be recorded in Saab’s order intake during the third quarter of 2026. Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled to take place between 2029 and 2030.

In addition to the 16 Gripen E fighters, the contract includes spare parts, associated equipment and logistical support to ensure sustained operational readiness for the Ukrainian Air Force.

Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, said the agreement reflects Sweden’s commitment to supporting Ukraine with advanced defence capabilities.

“I am deeply proud that Sweden and Saab can now enable the provision of Gripen E to Ukraine, bringing a world-class fighter that will transform the Ukrainian Air Force’s capability,” Johansson said. “This will significantly strengthen Ukraine’s air defence and help ensure the nation can protect its people and safeguard its future.”

The Gripen E is designed to operate in highly contested environments and is equipped to counter advanced aerial and ground threats. Its operational flexibility allows it to conduct missions from short runways, temporary airstrips and even public roads, supporting dispersed operations and enhancing survivability.

Built with a software-based architecture, the aircraft can be continuously upgraded to meet evolving mission requirements. Its low maintenance demands and rapid turnaround times are intended to provide operators with a cost-effective and highly available combat aircraft.

The contract reinforces Saab’s position as a leading supplier of advanced defence systems while supporting Ukraine’s long-term efforts to modernise its air force and strengthen national security.
