Rolls-Royce Power Systems Division has marked a significant milestone with the opening of its new Remanufacturing and Overhaul Center at the mtu Aiken campus in South Carolina, USA. The 69,000-square-foot facility, representing a low double-digit million-dollar investment, is a crucial addition to Rolls-Royce’s commitment to providing comprehensive services throughout the product lifecycle, ensuring the longevity, sustainability, and performance of its engines.

The opening of the Remanufacturing and Overhaul Center aligns with Rolls-Royce’s service initiative and sustainability approach, showcasing the company’s dedication to meeting the evolving needs of its customers in the Americas. The facility, announced in 2021, is strategically positioned to bring formerly outsourced workshop and warehouse operations in-house, further enhancing the company’s capabilities in remanufacturing and overhauling mtu Series 2000, Series 4000, and Detroit Diesel 2-Cycle engines and components.

Dr Jörg Stratmann, CEO, Rolls-Royce Power Systems said, “We have more than 150,000 engines in the field and our service business is growing. Service is not just maintenance and repair, but also upgrades, remanufacturing and digital services for predictive maintenance. Our customers trust us, and we want to fulfil this trust throughout the product lifecycle and into the next. To achieve this, excellent service is essential – and our Remanufacturing and Overhaul Center in Aiken will be a main pillar for serving our customers in the Americas.Remanufacturing is yet another part of our energy transition and sustainability story. With engines approved to run on sustainable fuels, we are significantly reducing emissions, and with remanufacturing we can get a second, third or even fourth lifetime from basically the same raw materials. It’s a total story of emissions and consumption reduction.

Rolls-Royce envisions the new Remanufacturing and Overhaul Center as a key component of its service ecosystem, contributing to the circular economy and reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. Remanufacturing is recognized as a wise lifecycle investment, providing numerous benefits such as lower acquisition, maintenance, and operation costs. By returning equipment to a like-new condition, remanufacturing ensures that the life of engines and components is extended, reducing the need for raw materials and energy consumption associated with new manufacturing.

The Remanufacturing and Overhaul Center in Aiken is designed to streamline operations and enhance Rolls-Royce’s support capabilities in the Americas. Initially focused on parts remanufacturing for after-sales support, the facility aims to remanufacture 20,000 parts per year once fully operational. This increased capacity will significantly improve spare part availability and customer support in the region.

The remanufacturing process follows established procedures already in place at global plant locations, such as the facility in Magdeburg, Germany. Rolls-Royce’s commitment to maintaining consistent quality and standards ensures that used engines and assemblies undergo a thorough process of disassembly, cleaning, inspection, and reworking. New or remanufactured parts replace outdated, worn, or damaged components, resulting in engines that meet or exceed original specifications.

The mtu Aiken campus has been a hub of continuous innovation since its opening in the fall of 2010. Initially focused on the production of mtu Series 2000 and Series 4000 engines, the campus has expanded its capabilities over the years. It now includes the assembly of military engines, machining of parts, energy production through its solar field and microgrid, and, with the addition of the Remanufacturing and Overhaul Center, the campus covers the full lifecycle of an mtu engine – from concept to overhaul or second life. Rolls-Royce’s commitment to sustainable practices, advanced technologies, and customer-focused solutions positions the mtu Aiken campus as a key player in the company’s global operations.
