The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) operates a fleet of NH90 Tactical Troop Helicopters from No. 3 Squadron at RNZAF Base Ohakea, supporting a range of military, emergency response and humanitarian missions.
The fleet is used for tactical troop transport, search and rescue, casualty evacuation, support for government agencies, maritime operations and humanitarian assistance across the Pacific. The aircraft have also supported responses to major natural disasters in New Zealand and overseas.
The aircraft supported several emergency operations following the 2019 Whakaari/White Island eruption and during the 2020 Australian bushfires.

Maintaining the fleet’s availability is supported by an embedded Airbus Helicopters workforce operating within the RNZAF maintenance organisation at Ohakea.
The integrated team combines Airbus technical expertise with RNZAF maintenance personnel and supports system checks, overhauls, repairs and other technical activities. The team has also expanded from four to ten Airbus personnel, providing continuity of knowledge across maintenance activities.
The maintenance organisation also contributes to technician development and technical knowledge transfer. RNZAF personnel work alongside Airbus specialists while progressing through their own engineering and maintenance qualifications.
Airbus avionics technician Alexandra Thompson, who works on the NH90 maintenance programme, said, “Because they’re an older aircraft and not brand new, there’s always going to be something fun to fix.”
The Ohakea team has also carried out fleet-wide aircraft software upgrades locally. New Zealand became the first country to complete the Software Release 2 upgrade across its NH90 fleet.

The combination of scheduled maintenance, embedded technical support and RNZAF personnel training allows the fleet to remain available for operational tasking while maintaining a consistent technical knowledge base within the maintenance organisation.
For a relatively small helicopter fleet, the RNZAF NH90 programme demonstrates the importance of integrated OEM and military maintenance support in sustaining aircraft used across tactical, disaster-response and humanitarian missions.
