Poland, Spain plan joint purchase of seven Airbus A330 MRTTs

Poland is set to acquire four Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft by 2030 under a joint procurement programme with Spain, strengthening its aerial refuelling and strategic transport capabilities.

Poland and Spain are moving ahead with plans to jointly acquire at least seven Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft under the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme.

Poland is expected to receive four A330 MRTTs by 2030, with the overall procurement estimated at around €5.4 billion. Spain’s government approved the framework agreement at a cabinet meeting, clearing the way for the joint acquisition.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said the next step would be the signing of the final contract. He confirmed that Poland’s participation in the programme would be covered through an annex to the Spanish framework agreement.

The acquisition is particularly significant as Poland continues to expand its combat-aircraft capabilities, including the introduction of F-35 fighter aircraft. The A330 MRTT will provide aerial refuelling support, allowing fighter aircraft to extend their range and endurance during missions.

“This is essential equipment for our Air Force, which is in the process of bringing F-35 aircraft into service,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said. He added that the capability would also support NATO and Poland’s broader security requirements.

Expanding Airlift and Refuelling Capability

Based on the commercial A330-200 platform, the A330 MRTT combines aerial refuelling with strategic transport capabilities. The aircraft can refuel multiple types of military aircraft in flight while also transporting troops, equipment and cargo. The platform can also be configured for medical evacuation missions, giving operators additional flexibility beyond its primary tanker role.

The planned Polish-Spanish procurement will add to the growing European fleet of A330 MRTTs. Several NATO members already operate the aircraft, either through national fleets or through multinational arrangements.

For Poland, the acquisition represents a significant expansion of its air mobility and force-projection infrastructure, particularly as the country modernises its air force and strengthens its contribution to NATO operations.

The framework agreement is expected to remain in force for seven years once formally concluded, with the first four aircraft for Poland targeted for delivery by 2030.
