The Netherlands has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Sweden for the planned acquisition of a Saab GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft.
The agreement does not yet constitute a procurement contract, and Saab has not received an order from the Netherlands. The next steps in the procurement process will determine the scope and terms of any future acquisition.
GlobalEye is an AEW&C system designed to provide surveillance and early warning across air, maritime, and land domains. It combines active and passive sensors to detect and identify objects over long ranges.
The system provides real-time information to air forces, armies and navies, supporting situational awareness and the identification of potential threats across multiple operational environments.
Saab President and CEO Micael Johansson said, “The system will provide enhanced situational awareness and early warning capabilities across multiple domains.”

The planned acquisition would add an airborne surveillance and command capability to the Netherlands’ defence infrastructure and support its wider NATO-related defence requirements.
Further details on the potential procurement, including the final aircraft quantity, configuration and support arrangements, will depend on the subsequent procurement process.
