Malakoff and TNB REMACO partner to explore power plant MRO and workforce

Malakoff Corporation Berhad has strengthened its focus on maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services through a new collaboration between its wholly owned subsidiary, Malakoff Technical Solutions Sdn Bhd (MTSSB), and TNB Repair and Maintenance Sdn Bhd (TNB REMACO), a subsidiary of TNB Power Generation under Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at exploring opportunities in power plant MRO services, while also advancing technical training, workforce development, and operational excellence initiatives within Malaysia’s energy sector.

Under the agreement, MTSSB and TNB REMACO will collaborate on maintenance and asset reliability programs for power generation facilities, leveraging their combined operational experience and technical expertise to enhance plant performance and operational efficiency.

In addition to supporting existing power generation assets, the partnership will evaluate opportunities to jointly pursue third-party MRO projects, creating new avenues for business growth beyond their current asset portfolios. The collaboration is expected to enable both organisations to expand their service offerings by combining technical capabilities, industry knowledge, and customer networks.

Malakoff Group Chief Executive Officer Syahrunizam Samsudin said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to improving asset reliability and strengthening technical competencies within the power sector.

“Reliable power plants are the result of disciplined maintenance, skilled people and continuous improvement,” said Syahrunizam. “This MoU with TNB REMACO is a natural extension of that commitment. Both organisations bring decades of operational experience in the Malaysian power sector and, by formalising this collaboration, we are creating a platform to share knowledge, build capability and raise the bar on how power plants are maintained and operated in this country.”

The partnership will also place significant emphasis on training and competency development, supporting the next generation of engineers and technical professionals required to maintain increasingly complex power generation assets. Workforce development has become an increasingly important focus for asset-intensive industries as experienced personnel retire, and demand for specialised technical skills continues to grow.

Syahrunizam noted that the collaboration aligns with Malakoff’s broader strategy of enhancing the performance and reliability of its existing thermal generation fleet while investing in long-term capability development.

“For Malakoff, this partnership directly supports our strategy of optimising the performance of our existing thermal fleet while developing the next generation of skilled engineers and technical professionals,” he said. “Strengthening reliability and workforce capability remains central as electricity demand rises and energy security becomes increasingly critical.”

The agreement reflects a wider trend across the industrial MRO sector, where operators are increasingly forming strategic partnerships to improve asset performance, optimise maintenance practices, and develop highly skilled technical workforces capable of supporting long-term operational sustainability.

Moving forward, Malakoff said it will continue to focus on strengthening operational performance across its energy and environmental solutions businesses, supported by investments in reliability, technical expertise, and sustainable service delivery.

The collaboration with TNB REMACO is expected to provide a foundation for future MRO growth opportunities while contributing to the resilience and efficiency of Malaysia’s power generation infrastructure.
