Lufthansa Technik, Cargo bolster Q2 results

Lufthansa Group reported an Adjusted EBIT of €383 million for the second quarter of 2026 as strong demand for air travel helped offset the impact of sharply higher fuel costs, while Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo continued to deliver solid earnings growth.

Group revenue increased 8 percent year-on-year to €11.1 billion, supported by sustained demand for premium travel and Asian routes. However, operating profit declined from €870 million in the prior-year period after the airline absorbed approximately €750 million in additional fuel costs and at least €150 million in strike-related expenses.

Commenting on the results, Lufthansa Group CEO Carsten Spohr said investments in premium products, fleet renewal and operational improvements are strengthening the company’s long-term competitiveness despite ongoing geopolitical and economic challenges.

The Group’s maintenance, repair and overhaul business remained a key earnings contributor during the quarter. Lufthansa Technik increased revenue by 11 percent to €2.2 billion, while revenue from external customers rose 23 percent. Adjusted EBIT reached €157 million, up from €149 million in the corresponding quarter of 2025, reflecting continued global demand for MRO services.

Lufthansa Cargo also delivered a stronger performance, reporting an Adjusted EBIT of €116 million compared with €73 million a year earlier. Cargo capacity increased by two percent, supported by additional belly freight capacity from ITA Airways, while yields climbed 27 percent amid sustained demand for air freight.

Across its passenger operations, Lufthansa’s network airlines reduced capacity by three percent due to strike-related disruptions and short-haul network optimisation. Nevertheless, load factors improved to 81.6 percent and unit revenues increased by 6.4 percent, although higher kerosene prices pushed fuel costs up by more than €600 million, reducing network airlines’ Adjusted EBIT to €137 million.

Eurowings also faced higher operating costs driven by maintenance expenditure, personnel costs and preparations for the introduction of the Boeing 737-8 MAX, posting an Adjusted EBIT loss of €37 million despite strong demand across European markets.

Lufthansa Group ended the quarter with liquidity of €10.7 billion and net financial debt of €8.3 billion, maintaining a stable balance sheet despite weaker cash flow.

Looking ahead, the Group expects continued volatility in fuel prices and booking patterns but reiterated confidence in its strategy. Lufthansa forecasts full-year 2026 Adjusted EBIT of between €1.7 billion and €2.2 billion, supported by resilient travel demand, network optimisation and disciplined cost management.
