Liebherr-Aerospace strengthens C919 support with Shanghai facility

Liebherr-Aerospace has commenced construction of a new manufacturing facility in Shanghai, marking a significant investment in its China operations. The new facility will expand the company’s local production capabilities while strengthening support for COMAC’s C919 aircraft programme and reinforcing its long-term commitment to China’s growing aerospace industry.

The new site will become an integral part of Liebherr-Aerospace’s global manufacturing network, with production focused on high-strength structural steel components for aircraft landing gear systems. The facility will also feature advanced surface treatment capabilities to support end-to-end manufacturing processes.

Situated in Phase III of the Large Aircraft Industrial Park in Shanghai’s Lingang New Area, the facility will cover approximately 16,000 square metres. Designed as a single-storey steel-structured building with an 18.3 m height and a 30 m span, the facility will accommodate the precision machining and assembly of large aircraft components.

The investment marks a significant step in strengthening Liebherr’s presence in China while enhancing its ability to supply landing gear components closer to its customer, COMAC. As one of the world’s leading landing gear manufacturers, the company aims to improve production efficiency and support the country’s growing commercial aviation sector.

By localising production, Liebherr-Aerospace expects to reduce transportation costs and shorten supply timelines for the COMAC C919 landing gear programme while providing faster and more responsive support to its customer.

Once completed, the facility will function as a regional manufacturing hub integrating precision machining and surface treatment operations. It will provide direct production support for the C919 programme and contribute to the continued growth of Shanghai’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem, particularly within the Lingang aviation cluster.

The groundbreaking marks the beginning of Liebherr-Aerospace’s local manufacturing operations in Shanghai, highlighting the company’s continued investment in regional production and its commitment to supporting China’s expanding commercial aircraft industry.
