LATAM Airlines has marked a significant milestone in its fleet modernisation programme with the arrival of a new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, becoming the first aircraft of its kind in South America to be equipped with GE Aerospace GEnx engines.
The GEnx is designed to deliver improved fuel efficiency and operational performance through the use of advanced materials and next-generation technologies. According to LATAM, the engines can reduce fuel consumption by up to 15% compared with previous-generation engines such as the CF6.
For airlines, the benefits extend beyond fuel savings. New-generation engine technologies are increasingly influencing maintenance strategies, reliability, lifecycle costs and fleet availability, making engine selection an important part of long-term fleet planning.

The arrival of the GEnx-powered 787-9 therefore represents more than a fleet expansion for LATAM. It highlights the broader shift towards more efficient, technologically advanced aircraft and engines as airlines across Latin America modernise their fleets and seek to improve operational economics.
For the MRO sector, the growing presence of GEnx-powered widebody aircraft in the region also points to evolving requirements for engine maintenance capabilities, technical expertise, tooling and aftermarket support.
