Labour strikes put aerospace production under pressure

The aerospace industry is facing renewed labour uncertainty on both sides of the Atlantic, with industrial disputes at Boeing and Airbus raising broader questions about production continuity, engineering capacity, aircraft deliveries and, importantly, the resilience of aerospace maintenance and support ecosystems.

At Boeing, the latest development comes after members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) overwhelmingly rejected the company’s latest contract proposal. The union represents around 17,000 engineers and technical employees in Boeing’s commercial airplanes business. With the current contract due to expire on October 6, Boeing has begun contingency planning for a possible strike and has posted contractor positions for engineering and technical roles.

The move signals that Boeing is preparing for a potential disruption rather than waiting for negotiations to reach a breaking point. While the company has stressed that its contingency planning is designed to protect business continuity while maintaining its focus on safety and quality, the reliance on outside resources is likely to attract scrutiny given Boeing’s recent history of manufacturing and quality challenges.

Engineering workforce a critical asset

The significance of the SPEEA dispute goes well beyond labour relations. Boeing‘s engineers and technical specialists play an important role in aircraft development, certification, production support and the resolution of technical issues.

A prolonged work stoppage could therefore affect programmes that are already under pressure, particularly the 737 MAX 10 and 777-9. Both aircraft have experienced significant certification and programme delays, and further disruption could push their entry into airline service even further out.

For Boeing, the timing is particularly sensitive. The company is still working to rebuild confidence in its manufacturing and safety systems following a series of quality-related problems and the January 2024 737 MAX door-plug incident. Any disruption involving the personnel responsible for engineering and technical oversight could create additional pressure on an organisation where consistency, documentation and quality control remain critical priorities.

Contractors bring both flexibility and risk

Boeing’s decision to advertise contractor positions illustrates one of the challenges facing large aerospace manufacturers during labour disputes: maintaining operational continuity without weakening institutional knowledge.

Contractors can provide additional capacity and help keep specific engineering activities moving. However, aerospace programmes depend heavily on accumulated knowledge of aircraft designs, certification requirements, production processes and engineering history.

Replacing experienced personnel is therefore not simply a question of filling vacancies. Engineering work in aviation is highly specialised, and transferring responsibilities between teams requires strong documentation, supervision and quality assurance.

For MRO providers, the lesson is equally important. Technical workforce continuity is increasingly becoming a strategic asset. As aircraft fleets become more complex and maintenance organisations handle larger volumes of data, specialised engineering knowledge can directly influence turnaround times, troubleshooting capability and operational reliability.

Airbus faces different labour challenges

Across the Atlantic, Airbus is confronting its own labour disruption in Spain. Thousands of Airbus employees have resumed strike action after rejecting the company’s latest proposal on pay and working conditions. Unions said around 90% of eligible workers participated in Tuesday’s stoppage, which they described as the beginning of an indefinite strike following 22 days of industrial action in July.

The dispute is significant because Airbus’ Spanish operations are not limited to administrative functions. The country’s eight Airbus sites produce military transport aircraft as well as components for commercial aircraft and satellites.

That creates a wider supply-chain exposure. Even when a strike does not completely halt aircraft assembly, disruption at individual sites can affect the availability and movement of components across a highly interconnected production network.

Delivery targets add pressure

The Airbus dispute comes as the company remains under pressure to meet its target of delivering 870 aircraft this year.

Airbus has said that disruption to administrative and support activities had not yet affected production, while unions have argued that the industrial action is already slowing military and commercial output.

The difference between these positions highlights an important feature of modern aerospace manufacturing: production does not necessarily stop suddenly when a strike begins.

The impact can build gradually through delayed components, engineering approvals, logistics bottlenecks, supplier coordination issues and reduced workforce availability. The consequences may only become visible weeks or months later, when production schedules begin to lose flexibility.

For airlines waiting for new aircraft, this can translate into delayed fleet expansion, postponed capacity increases and continued reliance on existing aircraft.

For the MRO industry, production disruptions can have an interesting secondary effect. When new aircraft deliveries are delayed, airlines may have to keep older aircraft in service for longer. That can increase demand for maintenance checks, component repairs, engine shop visits and life-extension work.

A delayed new-aircraft delivery does not necessarily mean an immediate reduction in maintenance activity. In some cases, it can have the opposite effect by extending the operating life of aircraft that were originally expected to leave the fleet.

This is particularly relevant in a market already dealing with supply-chain constraints, engine shortages and limited maintenance capacity. Airlines are increasingly being forced to manage fleets around the availability of aircraft rather than simply around commercial plans.

At the same time, prolonged production disruption can eventually affect MRO planning. Fewer new aircraft entering fleets may alter long-term maintenance demand profiles, while delays in spare-aircraft availability can place additional pressure on existing fleets.

The common thread

The Boeing and Airbus disputes are different in their immediate circumstances, but they reveal the same structural vulnerability: aerospace remains heavily dependent on skilled people. Automation and digitalisation are transforming aircraft production and maintenance, but they do not eliminate the need for experienced engineers, technicians, inspectors and certification specialists.

In fact, as aircraft systems become more sophisticated, specialised technical expertise becomes even more valuable. The industry’s challenge is therefore not simply to increase production capacity. It must also ensure that the workforce supporting that capacity is sufficiently skilled, experienced and available.

Safety must remain the red line

For passengers, labour disputes at aircraft manufacturers may appear to be an issue concerning wages, contracts and production schedules. But aviation has one non-negotiable priority: safety cannot become a casualty of operational pressure.

The important question is therefore not whether a manufacturer can maintain production during a strike, but whether it can do so without compromising engineering oversight, quality controls or certification discipline.

Boeing’s statement that its contingency planning will maintain a continued emphasis on safety and quality is significant in this context. Any replacement workforce, contractor arrangement or redistribution of responsibilities must operate within the same rigorous technical and regulatory framework.

For the travelling public, this provides an important reassurance: aircraft cannot simply be cleared for flight because a production target or delivery schedule needs to be met. Engineering approvals, inspections, certification requirements and regulatory oversight remain critical safeguards.

A warning

The current disputes underline a larger issue facing aerospace: resilience is not only about parts and factories; it is also about people. Manufacturers have spent years strengthening supply chains, increasing inventory visibility and investing in digital manufacturing. But workforce continuity deserves the same strategic attention.

A shortage of a specialised component can ground an aircraft. A shortage of specialised engineering expertise can create a different kind of bottleneck, one that may affect certification, production quality or maintenance decisions.

For Boeing and Airbus, the immediate priority will be reaching agreements that prevent prolonged disruption. For airlines and MRO providers, the developments offer another reminder that fleet planning must account for risks well beyond aircraft orders and maintenance capacity.

The aerospace industry’s ability to grow sustainably will ultimately depend on how effectively it manages people, production, supply chains and safety as one interconnected system.
