Global investment firm KKR has announced a new $1.4 billion equity commitment to expand its commercial aircraft leasing portfolio in partnership with aviation leasing and financing specialist Altavair, underscoring continued investor confidence in the long-term growth of the aviation sector.
The latest investment builds on two existing aircraft leasing portfolios established by KKR and Altavair and will be funded primarily through KKR’s Infrastructure and Asset-Based Finance strategies. The commitment comes as airlines worldwide continue to seek greater fleet flexibility and alternative financing solutions amid sustained growth in passenger demand.
“Nearly a decade of strategic partnership with Altavair has deepened our conviction in the attractiveness of aircraft leasing, which we believe is poised to grow even further as demand for air travel continues to rise and airlines seek more liquidity and fleet flexibility,” said Brandon Freiman, Partner and Head of North American Infrastructure at KKR.
Since forming their strategic partnership in 2018, KKR-managed funds have committed more than $8 billion to aircraft leasing and lending transactions. Together, KKR and Altavair have acquired 188 commercial aircraft and engine assets through a range of transactions, including sale-and-leaseback agreements, lessor acquisitions, passenger-to-freighter conversions, and structured financing arrangements.
The jointly managed portfolio currently supports 67 airline and cargo operators globally, reflecting the growing importance of leasing as airlines balance fleet expansion plans with capital efficiency.
Daniel Pietrzak, Partner and Global Head of Private Credit at KKR, said the investment reinforces the firm’s commitment to aviation through its Asset-Based Finance strategy. He highlighted the success of the partnership in combining KKR’s long-term capital with Altavair’s industry expertise and sourcing capabilities.
For Altavair, the expanded commitment comes at a time when airlines face significant fleet financing requirements driven by growing traffic demand, fleet modernization programmes, and ongoing aircraft delivery constraints.
“Our strategic partnership with KKR has grown stronger over the past eight years, and this latest commitment reflects the trust we have built together,” said Steve Rimmer, Chief Executive Officer of Altavair. “As airlines face significant fleet funding needs in the coming years, this expanded commitment positions us to be an even stronger partner across the aviation ecosystem.”
MRO Perspective
The continued flow of capital into aircraft leasing highlights the aviation industry’s confidence in long-term fleet growth despite ongoing supply chain and delivery challenges. As leased aircraft increasingly dominate airline fleets, MRO providers are expected to benefit from a larger installed base requiring maintenance, engine shop visits, modifications, asset transitions, and end-of-lease services.
The inclusion of engine assets and passenger-to-freighter conversion projects within the KKR–Altavair portfolio also reflects growing investor interest in aviation aftermarket opportunities, where maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities remain critical to preserving asset value and maximizing operational life cycles.
KKR has invested more than $12 billion in aviation since 2015, with interests spanning aircraft leasing, aviation finance, airport infrastructure, and related aerospace services, further demonstrating the sector’s appeal to long-term institutional investors.
