Joby and Toyota deepen eVTOL manufacturing alliance

Joby Aviation and Toyota Motor Corporation have launched the initial phase of their strategic manufacturing alliance by establishing a joint venture aimed at accelerating the commercial production of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

The partnership combines Joby’s expertise in electric aviation with Toyota’s decades of experience in manufacturing, production systems and operational excellence. The companies will initially focus on strengthening production capabilities by improving productivity, quality and cost efficiency.

The joint venture will also support Joby’s plans to expand aircraft production capacity as it moves toward certification and prepares to meet expected demand for its eVTOL aircraft.

JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, said the collaboration builds on nearly a decade of support from Toyota. He noted that Toyota has played an important role in helping Joby establish the foundations for manufacturing its aircraft and said the expanded partnership reflects both companies’ confidence in the future of advanced air mobility.

Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda said the alliance aligns with the company’s long-standing goal of providing mobility for everyone. He described air mobility as a natural extension of Toyota’s vision, expanding transportation beyond roads and creating new value for society. Toyoda added that partnering with Joby represents an important step toward making future mobility a reality.

The companies said they will continue working together through the joint venture, combining their complementary strengths to advance manufacturing excellence and bring electric air mobility to a wider market.

The long-standing relationship between the two companies benefits from Toyota’s proven manufacturing expertise. As development and certification progresses, the alliance aims to help transform eVTOL aircraft from an emerging technology into a practical transportation solution for everyday use.
