Japan Airlines (JAL) has unveiled its ambitious fleet renewal plan, announcing the procurement of a total of 21 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, 11 A321neo aircraft, and 10 Boeing 787-9 aircraft as part of its strategic vision to enhance and expand its operations both domestically and internationally. The introduction of these aircraft types will be staggered over a six-year period, commencing in FY2027, enabling JAL to systematically modernize its fleet and enhance operational efficiency.

For its international routes, JAL plans to introduce an additional 20 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which currently serve as the backbone of its domestic operations. Additionally, the airline aims to add 10 Boeing 787-9 aircraft to its existing fleet, with a focus on bolstering capacity on key routes to regions such as North America, Asia, and India, where future growth opportunities are anticipated. By 2030, JAL aims to significantly expand its international network, aiming to increase combined supply capacity by approximately 1.4 times, while prioritizing the adoption of the latest fuel-efficient aircraft to reduce CO2 emissions.

On domestic routes, JAL plans to introduce 21 Boeing 737-8 aircraft to replace its existing Boeing 737-800 fleet, starting in 2026. Additionally, the airline will introduce 11 Airbus A321neo aircraft to update its medium-sized Boeing 767 fleet, marking the first-time introduction of Airbus A321neo aircraft for JAL. These aircraft will be deployed strategically on routes aligned with demand, including those to and from Haneda Airport, starting from 2028.

Furthermore, JAL has decided to introduce one additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft configured for domestic operations, serving as a replacement for the A350-900 aircraft lost in January 2024.

The strategic adoption of fuel-efficient aircraft forms a crucial part of JAL Group’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions. The airline aims to achieve a 10% reduction in total emissions compared to 2019 levels by fiscal year 2030, with a long-term goal of near-zero emissions by fiscal year 2050.
