Jamco Corporation and JAXA Collaboratively Design Metamorphic Lavatory Concept Expanding Lavatory Capacity for PRM.

Jamco Corporation, one of the most experienced interior products suppliers and turnkey aircraft interior integrators in the industry, has designed its next-generation lavatory aimed at solving the long-standing difficulties of passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs) as a part of “Jamco Vision 2030”. This project is an ongoing collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Japanese national research and development agency for air and space.

Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRMs) requiring total assistance may face challenges accessing lavatories during flights due to cramped spaces that impede caregiver assistance. The “Metamorphic Lavatory” concept addresses this by temporarily merging two adjacent lavatory units and a connecting cross aisle, providing an expansive environment without reducing seat capacity.

Under the Metamorphic Lavatory concept, on a PRM’s request to use the lavatory, the cabin crew can maneuver the lavatory into expansion mode, where the doors blocking the cross aisle are closed to create a closed space with Odor and sound containment. The lavatory unit door and internal partition move together, allowing PRMs to access the toilet in their onboard wheelchair while accommodating two caregivers for support.

This concept can cater to a variety of passengers’ needs beyond the primary function. The lavatory houses a changing table for children and can support the setup of a simple bed that also serves as an adult changing table. A small folding shelf above the toilet can serve as a convenient place for ostomy appliances while allowing passengers to see themselves in the mirror. The multipurpose space is ideal for nursing activities and can also serve as a tranquil space for children to calm down.
