Iberia gains unrestricted AESA approval for A350 heavy maintenance

Iberia Maintenance has secured approval from the Spanish Aviation Safety and Security Agency (AESA) to perform heavy maintenance on the airline’s entire Airbus A350 fleet, marking the first time the authority has granted the company unrestricted authorization for the aircraft type.

The approval gives Iberia Maintenance comprehensive heavy maintenance capabilities for the A350, covering the full scope of work without operational limitations. The authorization strengthens the company’s ability to manage the maintenance requirements of its growing A350 fleet while creating opportunities to expand its heavy maintenance business.

The approval follows a two-year project launched in late 2024, involving more than 150 workstreams across training, engineering, production, materials, equipment, infrastructure, technical documentation, organisation, quality and IT systems.

According to Enrique Robledo, Director of Iberia Maintenance, the project was designed to ensure that the Heavy Maintenance division had the processes, equipment, documentation, organisational structure and qualified personnel required to maintain the A350 safely and efficiently.

Receiving the authorization without limitations from the outset also reflects AESA’s confidence in Iberia Maintenance’s capabilities and readiness to support the widebody aircraft.

The certification represents a significant expansion of Iberia Maintenance’s A350 MRO capabilities and positions the division to pursue further growth opportunities in the widebody maintenance market.
