IAI Signs $145 Million Contracts to Provide Long-Range Loitering Munitions

IAI Signs $145 Million Contracts to Provide Long-Range Loitering Munitions.
Harpy NG, Harop, and Mini Harpy are the long-range loitering munitions of the IAI family.

This order series illustrates IAI’s distinct capability in this market area and reflects the increasing demand for IAI’s long-range loitering munition family worldwide.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) struck two distinct deals to supply long-range loitering weapons to two different nations making the sum of the contracts $145 million. These two sizable orders come after an earlier agreement last year that also said that long-range loitering munitions from IAI would be purchased. This order series illustrates IAI’s distinct capability in this market area and reflects the increasing demand for IAI’s long-range loitering munition family worldwide.

When IAI unveiled the HARPY in the 1980s, it created the class of weapons known as loitering munitions. The Harpy was built for the Autonomous Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) missions and was outfitted with an Anti-Radiation (AR) seeker.  The HARPY NG, a more sophisticated loitering munition that may be deployed against a variety of radiating targets, is currently available from IAI as the Next Generation.

Boaz Levy President and CEO of IAI said, “Loitering munitions have proven critical to achieving operational success on the battlefield worldwide. The flexibility in strikes that can be achieved with a loitering munition is a major advantage in combat and the type of precision reached is of strategic and national importance. The latest orders emphasize the trust in IAI’s loitering munitions family in bringing the required advantages to each country respectively.”

Derived from the Harpy, the HAROP is a combat-proven loitering munition available in both land and naval versions. The Harop is employed in a range of combat situations, including counterterrorism threats. The HAROP scans to detect, identify, and attack stationary and moving targets with an Electro-Optical seeker that operates day and night.

The only lingering munition with a triple seeker (electrooptical, day/night, and augmented reality) in the world is the MINI HARPY. In extreme weather, the combined seeker makes it possible to detect and attack targets and makes it very difficult for targets to evade detection and destruction. The Mini Harpy is armed with an anti-tank weapon and is powered by electricity. Canister-launched, just like the other long-range missiles, Mini Harpy
