How an Aircraft got a second life under the waves

From a retired Boeing 737 to an underwater reef, this aircraft’s final MRO chapter was all about preparing an airframe for a very different mission.

What happens to an aircraft when its flying days are over? For one retired Boeing 737 off Vancouver Island, retirement did not mean the end of its operational story. Instead, the aircraft underwent a carefully planned end-of-life transformation before taking on a completely different role, as an artificial reef beneath the Pacific.

The former Canadian Airlines Boeing 737-200 was decommissioned after age and structural issues brought its commercial career to an end. Rather than simply abandoning the airframe, the aircraft was donated for an unusual recycling project led by the Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia (ARSBC).

But before the aircraft could become an underwater attraction, it first needed to go through its own version of an end-of-service MRO programme.

The aircraft was stripped of usable components and materials that could have posed a risk to the marine environment. Its airframe was cleaned and prepared specifically for submersion, while openings were created to allow water circulation and marine organisms to establish themselves inside and around the structure. The objective was not to return the aircraft to an airworthy condition, but to make the retired asset safe, stable and environmentally suitable for its next mission.

That distinction makes the project particularly interesting from an MRO perspective. The aircraft was no longer being maintained to fly; it was being maintained for a new purpose.

Once the preparation work was completed, the approximately 100-foot aircraft was transported for its final journey. On January 14, 2006, the Boeing 737 was carefully lowered by crane into the waters near Chemainus, British Columbia. It was positioned on a support structure above the seabed, where it became the Xihuw artificial reef.

Nearly two decades later, the airframe has taken on a remarkable second life. What was once an aircraft carrying passengers now provides shelter for marine organisms and has become a recognised dive site. Anemones, rockfish, sea stars and other marine life have gradually colonised the structure, turning an end-of-life aircraft into a living underwater habitat.

For the aviation industry, the story offers a quirky but compelling reminder that aircraft life does not necessarily end when an aircraft stops flying.

From component recovery and material removal to environmental preparation and structural modification, the Boeing 737’s final chapter involved many of the same principles that underpin responsible aircraft end-of-life management.

Its final mission simply happened to be one that no aircraft was ever designed for: becoming a reef beneath the waves.
