Honeywell Aerospace wins US Army contract to overhaul T55 engines for CH-47 Chinook fleet

Honeywell Aerospace has secured a three-year Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract from the U.S. Army to provide repair and overhaul (R&O) services for the T55-GA-714A turboshaft engines that power CH-47 Chinook helicopters.

Under the agreement, Honeywell will perform maintenance, repair, and overhaul work at its Engine Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Center located at the company’s aerospace headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona. The contract supports both the U.S. Army and international military operators, helping maintain the operational readiness and performance of Chinook fleets worldwide.

Dave Marinick, President of Engines & Power Systems at Honeywell Aerospace, said the company remains committed to supporting the T55 engine platform, which it has manufactured and enhanced for more than six decades.

“Honeywell Aerospace is proud to be the world-class provider of R&O services for the T55 engine used by CH-47 Chinook operators across the globe,” Marinick said. “Honeywell has been providing support and improvements for the T55 since its inception in the 1960s, and we look forward to continuing that support for decades to come.”

Honeywell said it has expanded the repair capacity of its Phoenix facility by applying commercial aviation best practices to the military engine overhaul program. The company noted that these improvements have increased throughput while reducing repair turnaround times.

Brian Laughton, Senior Director and Site Leader of Honeywell Aerospace’s Phoenix repair facility, said the company has adopted the same processes used on its FAA-certified turbofan engine overhaul lines.

“For the T55 R&O line, we use the same proven and robust processes that we use on our FAA-certified line to service industry-leading turbofan engines used on premier business jets,” Laughton said. “Capitalizing on these proven commercial processes has enabled us to double our capacity in the facility and reduce cycle time to ensure we are meeting delivery commitments to our customers.”

The CH-47 Chinook remains one of the world’s leading heavy-lift helicopters and is operated by the U.S. Army, more than 15 international military forces and several commercial operators. Since the T55 engine entered service in 1961, Honeywell has increased its horsepower output threefold while improving fuel efficiency and reducing maintenance requirements, supporting the aircraft’s continued role in demanding military and humanitarian missions worldwide.
