HAECO has completed its first Trent 700 engine fan case replacement for Hainan Airlines in Hong Kong. The project follows the signing of a General Terms Agreement (GTA) between the two companies and represents an important step in expanding their engine maintenance collaboration.
The project brought together the capabilities of Hong Kong Aero Engine Services Limited (HAESL) and HAECO Global Engine Support, demonstrating the group’s ability to coordinate specialised engine repair and installation activities within its Hong Kong network. The integrated approach enabled HAECO to deliver the required repair solution while helping minimise engine downtime for the airline.
First Trent 700 project under new partnership
The successful fan case replacement is the first project completed for Hainan Airlines following the establishment of the GTA. The agreement provides a framework for further engine maintenance cooperation between the two companies and creates a foundation for expanding HAECO’s support for Hainan Airlines’ engine requirements.
For an airline, fan case work can require close coordination between specialist repair capabilities, engine support teams and aircraft maintenance operations. By managing the repair and subsequent installation through its Hong Kong operations, HAECO was able to provide Hainan Airlines with an integrated solution focused on turnaround efficiency and operational continuity.
“Completing our first Trent 700 engine fan case replacement for Hainan Airlines marks an important milestone in our growing engine support partnership,” said George Edmunds, Group Director of Components and Engine Services at HAECO.
“By combining HAESL’s expertise in the Trent engine series with HAECO’s professional engine support capabilities, we are proud to provide a seamless solution that meets our customer’s high expectations for safety, reliability and turnaround efficiency,” he added.
HAESL expertise supports engine repair
The Trent 700 fan case repair was performed by HAESL, a joint venture within the HAECO Group, before the component was returned to HAECO Global Engine Support in Hong Kong for installation and final release.
The collaboration highlights the depth of engine capabilities available within the HAECO Group. HAESL’s experience with the Trent engine family, combined with HAECO’s wider engine support infrastructure, allowed the companies to coordinate the repair and installation process as a single support solution.
Such integration can be particularly valuable for operators seeking to reduce maintenance turnaround times. Rather than relying on separate providers for repair, engine support and installation, the work can be coordinated through an established MRO network with specialist capabilities across different stages of the maintenance process.
The project also demonstrates the importance of regional engine support capacity as airlines across Asia-Pacific seek faster access to specialised maintenance services and greater control over aircraft and engine downtime.
Hainan Airlines strengthens engine MRO partnership
For Hainan Airlines, the completion of the project establishes an important foundation for its relationship with HAECO. The airline highlighted HAECO’s engine expertise, integrated support capabilities, and Hong Kong facilities as key factors in delivering an efficient solution.
“We are pleased to partner with HAECO on this Trent 700 engine fan case replacement,” said Jingtao Wang, Deputy General Manager of the Purchasing Department at Hainan Airlines.
“The combination of HAECO’s extensive engine expertise, integrated support capabilities, and advanced facilities in Hong Kong enabled an efficient and reliable solution that supported our operational requirements,” Wang added.
According to Hainan Airlines, the successful completion of the project provides a strong foundation for the newly established GTA, with both companies expecting to further expand their collaboration in the years ahead.
The agreement could therefore represent the beginning of a broader engine support relationship rather than a one-off maintenance event, potentially creating additional opportunities for HAECO to support Hainan Airlines’ future engine maintenance requirements.
Expanding engine support in Asia-Pacific
The project comes as HAECO continues to strengthen its engine services portfolio across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. The company provides on-wing and in-shop engine services around the clock, supported by a network spanning Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Europe.
Its Hong Kong facilities provide a range of engine support capabilities, including on-wing and near-wing services, inspections and repairs. The facilities hold approvals from HKCAD, EASA, FAA and UKCAA, supporting work for operators across multiple regulatory environments.
The ability to combine regional proximity with regulatory approvals and specialist engine capabilities is increasingly important for airlines managing complex maintenance requirements. Access to localised engine support can help reduce logistics requirements, shorten turnaround times and minimise the operational impact of unscheduled maintenance.
Integrated MRO Capabilities
The Hainan Airlines project also highlights a broader trend within the engine aftermarket: airlines are increasingly looking for MRO partners capable of providing integrated solutions rather than isolated maintenance services.
HAECO’s ability to coordinate HAESL’s specialist Trent engine expertise with its own Global Engine Support operation illustrates how MRO groups can use multiple capabilities within the same network to provide a more streamlined customer solution.
For operators, this integrated model can simplify maintenance coordination while providing access to specialised repair expertise, installation support and final release capabilities through a connected MRO organisation.
As engine technologies become increasingly sophisticated and maintenance requirements grow more specialised, the ability to combine component, engine and technical-support capabilities is likely to remain an important differentiator in the aftermarket.
A Foundation for Further Collaboration
The completion of the first Trent 700 fan case replacement gives HAECO and Hainan Airlines an early operational milestone under their new GTA. More importantly, it demonstrates how the two organisations can work together to manage specialised engine maintenance requirements while maintaining a focus on safety, reliability and turnaround efficiency.
For HAECO, the project strengthens its position as an engine support provider in Hong Kong and across the wider Asia-Pacific market. For Hainan Airlines, the partnership provides access to established regional engine expertise and an integrated support network.
As both companies look to expand their collaboration, the first Trent 700 project could become a foundation for a broader engine maintenance relationship, one that combines specialised repair capability, regional proximity and integrated MRO support to keep aircraft engines available and airlines operational.
